Beware of Hangry Dinos - Another Update on my Upcoming book and creative process

in #hive-1801643 years ago
Another week has passed, and I felt it was about time to share another update with you all. So here goes...

In the last week or so, I have spent quite a lot of time cleaning my house ( let's call it an early 'Spring cleaning', as the weather sure is Spring like, here in Portugal, aside from the cold nights, mornings and evenings.

I have also spent quite some time on my dino writing, which is needed as I aim to publish my first book on the 22nd of the 2nd month of this year, as mentioned in my last write up.

This afternoon, while doing some more tidying up, I found a work of short stories that I hadn't seen or read before:

Kipling is most famous by 'Jungle book' - and, surprise, surprise, this book seems to be filled with ( short ) stories - for children - about animals.

I'll take this as a sign that it might be fun for me to read this, while I'm editing my dino stories book.

And then plans changed last minute and it's now a day later.

'Bem-vindo a Portugal! '( Welcome to Portugal! )

I just read my first short story by Kipling, after lunch.

'Just So Stories' was published in 1902, one hundred and 20 years ago. It feels a little old fashioned ( logically so ) but is kind of funny, poetic and imaginative.

It lacks dinos though, so let me make up for that with my writing.

I also discovered, today, that Kipling illustrated his own stories ( like me ). Cool!

Talking about illustrations...

This morning, I walked into town, for coffee, exercise and grocery shopping and I decided to bring my crayons ( oil pastels ) and some paper along, with the intention to come up with an illustration for my book.

Installed in my seat, with a coffee and an agua das pedras, I started (re)reading my two part story, titled 'Eggheads' - that can be found here - and reworking an earlier illustration.

This is the result:

eggheads a hangry dino .jpg

I left some written notes above it, intentionally, but I don't think it will end up like this in my book. They just show - in case you didn't know already - that my Hypersensitivosaurus stories are inspired by ( my ) real life. The cheese part isn't visible in this particular illustration but suffice to say that 'Gouda' plays an important part in the Eggheads story ( see previous link or click here ). What you see here is a hangry raptor, who put on a jacket, because he's cold. And, soon after, he heats himself up with his (h)anger.

The aforementioned isn't a skill that I possess. I hardly every get angry - although I can get hangry - so I have to warm myself up in different ways.

Now I could make this a very long post, but that wasn't my intention, so let me end it with the proof of today's creative café time, in pictures.

( Fun Fact: café is Portuguese for coffee, as well as for the place where you go to drink it ( as in French ).

The photograph shows my second coffee ( and last of the day ), as well as a pastel de nata.

Let me end today's update on my writing with the English translation for the text on my napkin, which could be taken as a metaphor for you visiting my blog:

Always ( welcome to ) return

Thank you for your preference

Sort:

I CAN READ IT.

Which means I am actually learning stuff from Duolingo, sometimes I'm not sure because I don't usually get around to real life practice XD

I remember reading Just So Stories when I was tiny, but I only very vaguely remember what any of them were about and even then I'm not sure if the memory is anywhere in the same universe as accurate XD

ps if you include that text in your book I hope that includes the struck through text ;D

Cool to hear that you start to understand Portuguese and no worries, the cheesyness will remain. I need it to balance out my serious side.

p.s. It seems that the Just So stories are mainly fictional, 'funny' stories to explain why certain animals ended up the way they are.

Ahh yes that brings back some memories including that the picture on the front cover was probably the one about why the elephant has a long trunk.

I guess it was, indeed.
Haven't read that story,
but I remember it as a joke

( although that might have been a 'flat' trunk ).

No, wait... that was about the crocodile's beak.

Hint: it had something to do with elephants falling out of the trees and the time of the day when the crocodile crossed the jungle.

P.S. I started reading other stuff again ( sci-fi ), Blindsight. About vampires in the future.

I'm on a 40 something day steak in Spanish! But I do the bar minimum every day...I feel like my goal has become not forgetting anything I've learned.

Nice :D

Yeh I've only been doing bare minimum lately as well, basically exactly enough to keep my streak going. But that seems to help so :)

It’s fun to discover just how similar some people were thinking 50 or 200 years ago. Or 2000 years ago. The difference is we have more resources to connect and leave proof of our work now.

I’ve been watching a lot of John and Yoko interviews and I was shocked at how similar their conversations are from the conversations I often have with friends, especially when comparing their politics to the political conversations I would get much more into 3 or 4 years ago. And then there are other things I hear about ancient philosophers (like Laozi or Mengzi) or historical figures and I am like “damn…we could have been friends”.

I hear you. I would probably have been hanging out with the philosophers, back in the days ;^)
