Belgium, the land of waffles, chocolate, beer and fries, and weather so unpredictable it could have its own reality show. After weeks of rain and wind playing tag team with my patience, the skies finally gave me a break yesterday. Even today, the weather isn’t exactly perfect, more like that one coworker who shows up late but still does their job. But hey, it was good enough to get my new DJI Neo in the air during my lunch break walk!
Now, let me set expectations here. I didn’t go full Top Gun mode because the wind decided it wasn’t done bullying me just yet. No full motion controller action or crazy high-altitude shots. Instead, I stuck to the basics, letting the Neo follow me automatically, just to dip my toes into what this little beast can do. And let me tell you, even with limited tricks, this drone already feels like it’s going to be my new favorite co-pilot during walks and all. And if the motion controller is as much fun as it looks, it might even introduce some Avata-ish drones as well! I'll try to share some footage later on today!
Of course, with the weather still teasing me, I had time to scroll through my Lightroom archives from early 2023, when I was rocking the DJI Air 3s. These photos? They’re the reminder I needed of why I love this hobby so much. Misty mornings where the sun peeks through the haze like it’s shy. Rolling green fields with a random cow living its best life. Quiet canals that look like something out of a European indie film.
Flying a drone is not just capturing photos, it’s about perspective. It’s seeing the world differently, noticing the little things, and appreciating the stillness from a thousand feet up. Even when the skies are stubborn and the wind wants to pick a fight, there’s beauty in just preparing, in remembering the great flights you’ve had, and in dreaming about the ones you’ll take when the weather finally cooperates.
So yeah, I’m still waiting for those perfectly calm skies to unleash the Neo’s full potential. But until then, I’m content reliving past adventures through these shots. Because if there’s one thing I’ve learned from this hobby, it’s that patience isn’t just a virtue, it’s a requirement.
So let the skies clear up, the winds calm down, and the next great flight waiting just over the horizon. Keep your drones charged, your controllers steady, and your cows unbothered!
