Brown and Caramel

Its time for another #beersaturday review. This week I have two randoms to discuss, a brown ale and what I'm calling a caramel flavored concoction. Let's check them out.

Style: Flavored ale
Abv: 6.2%

Marketing: Charcoal wood with golden honey colored accents. Caramel drip imagery giving it a definitive desser-like look.

Color: The beer poured a golden caramel color with a white creamy colored head made up of micro bubbles. Definitely inviting.

Nose: Malty aroma, sweet smell of caramel, with notes of vanilla and milk chocolate in the background. Very pleasant smell overall.

Taste: Surprisingly this beer was only mildly sweet considering the name. I thought that it would be more dessert like and possibly even sickly, but not so. It was fairly well balanced with a nice bitterness in the finish. There were some caramel and vanilla flavors coming through and the taste of alcohol as well. I didn't notice any Rye flavors myself.

Texture: Very small bubbles but still nicely carbonated. It had a very creamy mouthfeel overall.

Impression: I bought this beer by accident I think. I don't normally buy flavored beers and I noticed the caramel and vanilla banner at the top of the can when I got home. Not sure how I missed that. I held off on drinking this one for a long time because I figured that it would be very fake tasting with a lot of extract flavors. Actually, it ended up being an okay beer in the end. The flavoring was there but it was subtle amd it wasn't too sweet. Not amazing but an alright beer for me.

Marketing: Brown colored can with yellow and red accents. City street car image. The design looks very classic. I find it quite boring actually.

Color: The beer poured a deep rich chestnut brown color with a tan colored head that dissappeared as quickly as it poured making the liquid look a little syrupy.

Nose: I got a sweet malty aroma with toasted malt and toffee notes.

Taste: An equal amount of sweet and tangy flavors in the begining moving toward a nice bitter finish. This beer was well balanced in my opinion. A nice malty flavor with a distinct nutty taste and some toasted malt notes as well. The taste seemed to match the style of beer in a way that one would expect.

Texture: Nice carbonation that wasn't overpowering. The beer felt soft in the mouth. Light to medium bodied.

Impression: A very good beer overall with lots of flavor. It tasted fresh and like it was made with good ingredients. I liked this one a lot and would definitely buy it again. I wish it had more of a head on the pour but other than that, good all around.

I love the color of the first beer. But like you, I'm not a fan of flavored beer. But if one day I'm in Toronto, I think I'll let myself be tempted by this brewery with this stout.

Hehe, the head disappearing so quick is sometimes something that rings alarm bells but glad it worked out!

Yeah I agree. It happens a lot for me though. Sometimes I wonder if it's my glasses. Like maybe soap residue from the dishwasher left in the glass. Soap breaks down bubbles really fast. Naturally carbonated beers have weaker foam and beers that don't use head stabilizers as well. So it's hard to say what's going on when it happens. But its like, every 3rd beer I buy lol. As long as the beer itself doesn't go flat though. That's the main thing I guess.

It took me ages (sadly) to realise that a wet glass totally inhibits a head forming/lasting as well. I used to rinse my glass between different beers and wondered why the second had a rubbish head. A problem that doesn't really occur when you drink the same beer a few times in a row!

Water too? Okay, i didn't know that. I'll keep it in mind. I need to figure out what I'm doing because beer without head is not the same psychologically 😆
