Sunflower fields

in #hive-190931last month

It is rather remarkable that out of all the major field crops grown in the Midwest, sunflowers are the only one native to the United States.

This field of sunflowers is north of my town and I'm sharing these phone photos to promote the Phonography Contest.

Native Americans used sunflowers as a food crop, but when Europeans first arrived they only viewed sunflowers as pretty ornamentals

Today, most sunflowers in the U.S. and worldwide are grown for vegetable oil production, but I think this sunflower crop will be sold for bird seed

I love seeing all the new ornamental varieties of sunflowers that are now offered in garden seed catalogs. . Besides the common gold colors, there are now orange, red, and white-colored varieties along with various shades of yellow. There are also pollen free varieties that can be picked for bouquets and brought indoors without making a mess.

There is another sunflower farm south of town that claims to have many different sunflower varieties, and I hope to get photos from there in the next few weeks while the flowers are at their peak! Sunflowers are vulnerable to high winds, so I am hoping for good weather.

Thanks so much!

Wow, this information is absolutely unique for me. All I knew was that sunflowers are only yellow in colour. It seems that I am very ignorant of the world. haha!
Anyways, thank you for this beautiful promotion, If this was a contest entry, it would have been one of the winners!💛🤗

Awww! That's so nice of you to say! Glad you enjoyed the happy flowers. I was hoping you would like these.

Beautiful sunflower photos 😍 I would sell them to folks like me that feed them to the local birds, I think the price would be good. I know I seem to spend alot on sunflower seeds 😅

I wish I could grow them, but chipmunks eat the seeds while they are still green.
Birdseed keeps getting more and more expensive each time I go to buy it.

One is beautiful, a whole field of them is stunning!

gosh I can imagine! I am also fascinated by the color variants. I've never seen anything other than yellow.

I'll get some photos this week!
