Worldbuilding Weekend Prompt #93 Imagi-Nations

in #hive-1910389 days ago

Welcome to the next in an ongoing series of writing prompts in the Worldbuilding community !

I'm aiming to post one of these each Sunday. They aren't a replacement for the excellent daily prompts from @worldbuilding they're just an extra opportunity if you have a writing itch you want to scratch. 😀

The prompt this week is - Imagi-Nations

In tabletop wargaming, an Imagi-Nation is a country in a game which is fictitious but recognisable as an analogue to a real world place. For example, in a game I played in called "The World Game", there were countries with names like Italvini, Nord, Tarkus and (most notoriously) the United States of Democravia - USOD for short.

Imagi-Nations are also used in the real world by staff colleges and military officers planning exercises and wanting to add a bit more flavour than just calling them 'Country Red' and 'Country Blue' but without going to the possibly diplomatically awkward point of just naming a hostile neighbour. "In this exercise we will be defending against the forces of Pays D'Artois" is so much more tactful than saying "We'll be fighting the French, chaps".

Tell me about Imagi-Nations in your setting ! How closely are they modelled on a real or historical country ? What are the points of difference ? Is the name a dead giveaway, or even a private joke ? Or perhaps you could use this prompt to tell me a story about an event in your setting where someone creates or uses an Imagi-Nation for some purpose. Have fun !

Just to add a bit of spice to things, the two entries I most like (and are linked in comments to this post, so I can find them !) that are posted by midnight (GMT) next Saturday will each get a prize of one Hive SBI.

This link will take you to the FAQ where you can read more about Hive SBI - it's a project I thoroughly support because it gives both the donor and winner a steady trickle of passive income paid out in the form of upvotes on posts.

I stole these guidelines straight from @worldbuilding prompts (I hope that's okay !), I couldn't have written them any better myself....

It can be a lot of fun to mix and match our prompts with some of these other community prompts.

Does it count if I've crafted parts of my setting off of other fiction that in turn crafted their stuff off real societies? 😂

I have one Kingdom that is based loosely on the Great Houses of Dune, as an example.

Works for me ! After all, Frank Herbert wove all kinds of historical ideas together when he wrote the books. The original book was basically a re-telling of the fall of Sassanid Persia with enough other threads woven in to make it something new and original.

Heck yeah. I'll make that my mission for the rest of the week then. I've been meaning to flesh these guys out in a meaningful way for a while, they're mostly broad strokes and rough ideas as I haven't had to set anything in that area yet.
