I'm back with a few new recent records that I found in the hip hop cheap bin!

Jody Watley
"Friends"
1989

They say that this Jody Watley song is the first pop song with a guest rap, featuring Rakim, who gets a second verse on this extended remix. I didn't realize that this song was produced by Andre Cymone, a former member of Prince's band, although this remix was produced by Hank Shocklee and Eric Sadler, of the Bomb Squad, and Paul Shabazz.

EVIAN and the Atlantis Posse
"Techno City"
1988

Here is some great late eighties electro hip hop from the West coast. Techno Kut Records was founded by DJ Unknown and Lonzo, who was from the world Class Wreckin' Cru, a precursor to NWA that had Dr. Dre and DJ Yella as members, among others. Lonzo owned some nightclubs and other venues and was a huge figure in the West coast hip hop music scene in the eighties.

Chill C
"My Trunk Is Boomin"
1989?

This one is pretty hard to find any information about, not even the exact year this record came out!... Even though I'm pretty certain it was 1989, going by other releases on that label and looking at catalog numbers. After looking up the area code on the record, I was able to pinpoint it to Florida, which I pretty much was able to guess anyway, although it doesn't have that Florida Bass sound, just that uptempo flow.

Nemesis
"I Want Your Sex"
1991

Speaking of Southern Bass music, Nemesis was an early 90s group from Texas that I only knew one other song by, "Munchies for your Bass." They seem to be going for that more low key laid back romantic Love and Bass sound, as opposed to the 2 Live Crew "obnoxiously in your face" style of bass and dirty romance. That's such around for a few years after this, perhaps they had a strong local following in Texas, where the Geto Boys are from, they even had Bushwick Bill featured on a track.

Thanks for reading!

Awesome selection Bro! Especially "Techno City" & "My Trunk is Boomin'"😀

Yes, for sure...I had never heard trunk is booming before, either!

These tunes are what "Diggin' in the crates" is all about😉
