Johnny Adams (born Laten John Adams Jr. in Louisiana) was an American blues, jazz and gospel singer, known as "The Tan Canary" for the multi-octave range of his singing voice, his swooping vocal mannerisms and falsetto. Adams came out with Walking on a Tightrope: The Songs of Percy Mayfield in 1989. Every song was written by Percy Mayfield who was a blues icon in his own right. Joining him are the great New Orleans drummer Johnny Vidacovich and Jon Cleary on a very nice blues jazz piano. Walter 'Wolfman' Washington plays tasty guitar throughout. The title track has a great jazz blues set up and words that sound like they were written yesterday. Lost Mind is a tune about a woman that was a 'devil with the face of an angel'. It's one of the best versions I have heard of this wonderful tune. Danger Zone is also one of the best Mayfield tunes and is covered in splendid fashion. Look the Whole World Over is a straight ahead blues with horns and a nice scat solo by Johnny. This is his best album that I know of. Adams has another composer oriented album called The Real Me with all songs written by Doc Pomus which you may also enjoy. His jazz album is called The Verdict in which he covers more standard jazz material with New Orleans musicians.
