The News
I am sure many of you noticed a spike in the $HIVE price this week. It was up around 15% for a while with massive volume that seemed to mostly come from Upbit in Korea. It has fallen since then, but may find a new level. As always, we can play a part in that by promoting the platform.
I have used many social platforms over the years. Many of those got shut down for various reasons, with Google being a serial offender (Orkut, Google+, Buzz, Waves). This is why I now prefer decentralised plaforms. The other one I use apart from Hive is Mastodon. That does not use blockchain, but relies on people hosting servers. You can register for any you like or even run your own. It uses the ActivityPub protocol to share updates across the network. The people behind this have set up the Social Web Foundation to promote this technology. They already have platforms like BlueSky (ex-Twitter people) and Medium on board and I think Hive could benefit from it too. If people on Mastodon could subscribe to your Hive content then you have a much bigger potential audience. There has already been some experiments by @hivetrending to at least allow Hive profiles to be seen on Mastodon (may not be working now). We have to accept that the Hive audience is pretty small and extending it opens possibilities. I am not sure how this would all be implemented, but I would hope those with the expertise could look into it.
Back on Hive, the Comment Rewarder is a new way to reward comments on your posts when your voting power may not be enough to do so directly. We need more engagement with posts, so this could be a way to build that.
Friday Follows
- I posted about our solar panels this week. Some other people on Hive who have solar include @ksteem, @solominer and @offgridlife. @cryptoandcoffee is getting it soon. It would be great to see more experiences with this technology on Hive. People here like to have some independence as well as saving money.
- Electronic musician @tdctunes is proposing a collaborative multi-media project that writers and artists could get involved with. Hive has already inspired lots of collaborations in different artistic fields.
- Musician and writer @killerwot lost a good friend when his band's singer passed away. Send him some good wishes.
The Dog House
Anyone who has been on here for a while will have seen someone 'rage quit' after feeling hard done by. I get that they can feel aggrieved when they get downvotes that they feel are not warranted, but the freedom that Hive offers makes this possible. It can happen for all sorts of reasons. Someone may feel that you are exploiting Hive or it may just be a personal disagreement. Their behaviour is all public, so they may be judged, but so will you if you start attacking the community. If you upset enough people then you may as well leave as you will find it hard to recover. Other, lesser, platforms may welcome you.
It is better to try and work through such problems. I have seen many people keep posting despite persistent downvotes. If you can get enough support then you may still earn despite the haters. They cannot take away your curation rewards unless they downvote everything you vote on (which will make them more enemies) and anything you earn on HBD savings is yours.
I think it is unhealthy to bear grudges, but people can be stubborn. I really do not think that too many big accounts really want to drive people away as it is in their interest for Hive to grow. Growth will bring issues, but we have to work through those.
I will never pretend that Hive is perfect, but it tends to be what you make of it. Working with the greater community tends to give good results.
The End
How can be almost October? Time rushes on and we have to get on with achieving our goals. Do not wait for others to build the community you want to see.
I will be running another #BritList next weekend. I always welcome tipoffs on people I may have missed. I plan to run some more lists for other countries, but I want others from those communities to take over the job as maintaining one country list is enough for me.
Have a great weekend and Hive five!
