When Hivers Gather Cool Things Happen

in #hivelast year

Yesterday was the day of the Hitchin Hive walk. I had several people interested, but a few could not make it in the end. I met two people for the first time when we met up by the station. In attendance were:

  • @daniellemurray who I know well from making music together. She was our guide with her extensive local knowledge.
  • @anna-newkey is another of my musician friends.
  • I have known @stav for a long time since we were on the forum of the Six String Bliss guitar podcast and we have been to a few guitar events together. He drove from near Great Yarmouth.
  • @atma.love has a place in Bulgaria, but had come from Thetford.
  • @alonicus came from Farnborough.

We saw another musician friend at the station, but he was off elsewhere. He is not really into computers and the internet anyway.

After a very wet Saturday I was relieved that Sunday was dry and looking pretty bright. I soon needed to take off my raincoat. I had brought an umbrella too. Danielle took us across the meadows to the River Purwell. We passed the old mill and some cottages that probably housed some of the workers.

Purwell Mill

I was so busy talking to people that I hardly took any photos. Luckily Anke had taken lots. Her dog Mia seemed to enjoy the outing.

We explored some of the local nature reserves and a road that could date back before the Romans. This was all just on the edge of town, but felt very rural. We did not see any water voles or otters, but there was lots of insect life and a few birds.

When you get together with Hivers you will learn things as we each use it in our own ways. I always say that the bandwidth of face to face is much better than online. There are so many different communities and so we may not encounter some people. I do not have time to explore everything.

Danielle left us as we headed back into town as she had people coming over for a music session. I knew the way from there anyway as I am often in Hitchin. I had seen some new places this time though.

There are lots of nice old buildings around the town square where we rested our feet at an outdoor cafe. We even had a classical singer entertaining us. @atma.love made him aware of Hive as well as the people running the cafe. Perhaps we will see some businesses and buskers taking $HBD some day.

Winners

I had brought along some signed books by @katharsisdrill that I gave away in a random draw. @anna-newkey and @alonicus were the lucky winners.

Are we wandered back to our respective vehicles we bumped into @steve-o2023 who was having a trip out on his motorbike.

I really would recommend that people try organising events like this. Many Hivers have never met others in person and it enhances the community spirit. It need not cost money to set up as you just need some location where people can gather. I just like the idea of taking a walk as it gives opportunities for photography. We were lucky as Monday was wet as well. If we had been rained on then I would have just taken us to a pub or cafe where we could chat.

I will get to other meetups if I can. We used to have a few in London, so who is going to set one up? We have a few people in Brighton and I would happily take a trip down there. You just cannot rely on the British weather.

Hive five!

Sort:

A jolly enjoyable day out even for an introvert who struggles meeting new people. I can't wait for the next one...will do my best to attend.

Thanks once again for organising.

Thanks for coming. It was great to see you again. I think there are some others in Norfolk, so a more local event may be possible.

Everyone is entitled to their own views, but we do not have to agree on everything. I have had some interesting debates with other Hivers.

Wow! Meet ups is always fun making us to know more other hivers. I never met anyone in hive, hopefully I can meet some of them soon too.

Looks like time well spent and a great initiative! Cheers! !BEER

This sounds lovely, the perfect meetup: a small group of people, a relaxed walk, time to chat, somewhere to go if the weather is unfavourable. These small impromptu groups are so worthwhile, easy to do and don't involve much organisation. I think I prefer them to the big shebangs - certainly less stress!

Sorry I missed @stav, would have been great to meet after all this time, and good to meet @alonicus in person (a great Saturday Saver club supporter) ... but that's true of everyone 😁.

It's a shame you couldn't come, but there will be other opportunities. I may do another in a couple of months.

😍

The halloumi burger was amazing @shanibeer 😀

That's an incentive! 😁

Dear @shanibeer, you just got hugged.

Esto es genial amigo, me encantaría estar por esos lugares y conocerlos a todos .

You missed the big group photo!

Yeah, I messed up on that front. Others took group shots, but I'm not sure if we got one with everyone.

You know it's a great time spent together with cool people when you forget about technology and focus on the IRL talks and interactions. Really happy for you :)

I think we could organise more of these, what a great idea!

Looks like a good relaxed meetup. The best kind. I just try to make my way down south one of these times

You need one up your way. We have a fair few Scots on Hive, but you may be spread around.

I fear it's the spreading. I also think there are a fair few unevenly distributed in the East coast and they are a hard bunch to understand 😀

Am still looking forward to attending one of my first hive meetup

What a cool looking town. Looks like a lot of fun. I'm not on my game right now with keeping track of events, and I would not have been able to make it anyway if I'd known. Hopefully in the near future we can organise a London meetup. I remember the time we had one at least once a month. Those were good times.

As I've said, it just needs someone to set a date. I'm sure we could get a few people together in London, but it needs a bit of notice.

Catch you next time.

When one finds similar people who both like music and enjoy talking about it, one's time goes much better and one gets to learn a lot from each other.

Great initiative an d a great get-together and hike and Hive-talk, congrats.

@tipu curate

Even if just one person had turned up it could have been fun. We need more events so everyone can get to one.

Looks and sounds like it was an awesome time! I am glad those who were able to make it had a good time!

Good the thing happened. Folks are usually hard to organize 😎 !BEER

Thanks for organising this @steevc ! It was a great day out, and I hadn't realised Hitchin was such a beautiful town. You're right that meeting up face-to-face is a great way to communicate. I might see if I can find a venue around my way that would be happy for a bunch of us to sit and natter for a day over coffee 😁

Go for it! It was nice to meet you. Do you know of any other Hivers in your area? The #BritList I put together may help in finding people.

!BEER

Good idea - I've had a scan through the list and can't see any that are really, really local. But of course there is that group who are just down as "somewhere in the UK" plus some who might be happy to travel.

An idea I've had would be to try to find and entice someone who knows far more than me about Hive and build into the event some kind of presentation and FAQ on ways to get the best out of the ecosystem, but that might be too ambitious for a first meeting !

Let me know if you do something, even if it's just meeting at a pub. I can publicise events on my posts.

Thank you - will do !

That's such a great idea, being able to present it to people like that, where people could bring their laptops and get setup while at the event would be cool. Any of the people I've onboarded I had to sit with them and run them through everything, as it's a fairly difficult process for some people.

Yep, you're right. It sometimes feels like anything crypto-related is made to be as insanely over-complex as possible. Kind of like a badge of achievement.

But if we're going to get more ordinary people to join us, I reckon we need to have a slick onboarding and teaching process. Even if what is going on underneath is complex, I'm sure we can automate things so that on the surface it all looks polished and straightforward. 😀

This is amazing man, I'm delighted that everyone had a good time and that there was a nice group there for it. I'd really like to get to a meetup, I wouldn't mind organising, or at least helping to organise an Irish meetup, although things are a bit up in the air at the moment time-wise, I'm sure I could swing an afternoon out for it. You're right man, meeting up would be good for the comradery and social spirit of Hive.

Buskers/ waiters and waitresses accepting HBD tips wouldn't be a bad idea and could be another selling point for Hive.

I had an idea a few years ago for an app where people could tip each other; I was going to call it tip-the-band, turns out it was already a thing when I looked into it. I did have elements that would be different than the current apps available though. I wish I knew how to make these kinds of things or at least knew someone who could haha
