Hey there, fellow music enthusiasts! As someone who has spent years in the music industry as a DJ and producer, I know the struggle of juggling live performances and studio work. In this blog post, I want to share my insights on how to navigate the often challenging path of balancing both worlds.

For me, the first time I stepped onto a stage is an indelible memory. The energy in the room was incredible for being a small venue, and I felt like I was on top of the world, even as an opening DJ. If the hook catches you, you will end up finding studio production to be a bit of an addiction and will end up spending HOURS at a time working on your sounds, but you need to come up for air sometime, haha.

Begin by defining your priorities. Do you want to be primarily a live performer, or do you lean more towards studio production? Knowing your goals will serve as a compass for your choices and how you divide your time. It will also help guide you to where you will eventually end up in your music career as not everyone will end up being a famous musician, but you may find your place somewhere behind the scenes. But you will figure this out in time.
Create a Schedule
Design a well-structured schedule that allows you to allocate time to both live performances and studio work. Consistency is key. Plan your shows well in advance to avoid last-minute chaos. Nothing is worse than getting to a gig and not having all of your gear, cables, etc. Or, you end up doing like I did one night and showing up to the wrong club on the wrong night, lol.

Don't fall into the trap of trying to do everything yourself. Consider outsourcing tasks like promotion, booking, or even studio engineering if that's not your thing to professionals. Working together not only eases the workload but also brings fresh perspectives and ideas to your music. You need fresh ears on your work sometimes to help it progress. I know I need a second opinion at times to help assure that my songs are heading in the right direction. It can be as simple as having a friend that loves music give you some feedback on what they think of it. This can help you in a big way down the line.
Stay Inspired
To maintain your creativity and motivation, seek inspiration beyond your usual routine. Explore different genres, and attend live shows as an audience member. These experiences can rekindle your creative spark and keep your passion alive. I know this helps me when I am in the creative rutt. That and there is nothing like leaving your stress on a club dance floor, or by banging your head and pumping your fists at a rock show!
You don't always have to attend live events to get this feeling. Sometimes it's as easy as just putting in my air pods and listening to a random playlist on one of the streaming services to get some new sounds in my head. It can also give a gauge on how your work is sounding against your musical competition.

Balancing live performance and studio production is a demanding journey, but the rewards are unparalleled in my humble opinion. It's like experiencing the best of both worlds – the rush of the stage and the serenity of the studio. Your unique path will take time to discover, but as you navigate it, you will find your place in the musical world, whether it's in the lime light, behind the scenes, or both!
