California state certainly has its beautiful places. On a sunny Sunday afternoon, my family and I decided to visit El Presidio. The historical society held a drawing contest for the residents and kids of the surrounding area.
The Presidio's History
The Presidio, first established in 1782, served as a military fortress for over 100 years. Eventually, the historical society of Santa Barbara, and then California, inducted it into the halls of the preservation society. They've slowly been restoring the area, but plans are in place to fully restore the fortress to its original configuration.

The cannons seen in the images above are replicas along with the artillery. After placing gunpowder and other material, they used 4-IN balls that would go into the cannon.
The Tour
We did go to the Presidio for a drawing contest, however. My wife and I needed to keep to the schedule. We got the kids set up with their drawing materials, and they set to work drawing whichever of the beautiful imagery surrounding the fort. It's funny, in a way. When the fort was active, it was pretty serious to behold. As a historical site, what once was used for war now paints a picture of a past lived long ago.

A Walk Around Time
The kids completed their contest drawings. We were ready to finish walking around Santa Barbara's time machine. I had to let the kids play about as they just loved the area. My oldest wanted to play games around the replica cannons so he could defeat the evildoers, and my youngest was just happy enough to play along. We looked for treasure and, to our disappointment, could find any, but that's okay. The fun in looking for treasure is mainly in the experience itself.
The Commandery
The last place in our stop was the Commandery of the Presidio. It was an elegant place for its time. I could imagine someone lording over the fortress during their official business periods in this room. My son certainly thought so, at least. He asked if the mommy and daddy of the place paid their bills here. I told him they did while they were still around. Done staring into the past, my son asked for some ice cream, turned around, and walked outside.
Eventually, my boys turned in their contests with the anticipation of fame and glory before them. They said goodbye to the people running the contest, exchanged farewells, and then walked away from the Presidio, looking for more adventure on our way home.
I enjoyed our time there. I hope to return to Santa Barbara, California, in the future.

All images taken of Santa Barbara's Presidio and my children's drawings were taken by me on my iPhone 11.
Also, this is my first time using Pinmapple. I've added the code, so I hope it works!
