I got into a conversation with a friend of mine not long ago. We discussed how hard the economy is and how tough it has become to survive nowadays. We blamed our government for almost everything we are facing in the country down to the minimum and less expensive things in our localities.
We see the government as the only and lasting solution to all of our problems in the country and not see all of what we are having as our inner problems. We all have our individual problems.
It is said that charity begins at home. We are all responsible for a better country. A man who is not capable of controlling and handling his immediate home. How does he expect to have a good society?
A local government chairman who is not capable of handling his locality. How do we expect such a person to handle a state? The issue lies between not being able to handle his family affairs and not being expected to hold a community or a locality. This is where the problem originates.
As humans we tend to be habe our different characters, some are greedy, some are polite and honest, some are selfless, and some are selfish. All of these traits most times are not obvious to be detected. But some signs will show or give a hint of these traits only to those who can detect them.
So the same way we have all of this variance among people is the same way we have those variances among those at the top leading us. Some are so patriotic, committed, and dedicated to their duty as a leader. But some are just the opposite. All of these people are together in governance.
The system of governance also varies, as we have the democratic and the military system of governance. The democrat is said to be the government of the people by the people and for the people. Giving everyone the right to do things and also abide by the law.
But as for the military system, it is a system of hierarchy and command. The higher your rank the more your power. In this system, the power of governance doesn’t lie in the hands of any group of people. But in the hands of the military. The order is given and stamped effectively.
Both systems have their merit and demerits. But it happens that the democratic system of governance in my country Nigeria has been upside down. Since there is freedom and the right to do things. Then everyone has been taking advantage of the system and having little or no control over things in the nation.
Sadly, the citizens of the country keep having bitter complaints about the system. They believe that the government is a corrupt one. That's right. But the level of corruption is from the ground level too. So how do we expect to change? No matter how much we try to eradicate those at the top, those below with the same mindset will still have to do the same.
We have heard a lot of instances where corrupt politicians embezzled public funds for their gains. And another thing is that the way it’s happened at the top it’s happening below too. Instances where marketers just tend to inflate the price of goods and services at their own will since there is no price regulation.
All of these are what contribute to the type of nation we find ourselves in today. If we want a good government then we should start right from scratch.
This is my response to the HIVE LEARNERS weekly prompt in hive learners community for the Week 130 Edition 2 and the topic to be discussed is ANTI-DEMOCRACY
