I’ve been opening my mouth in shock while reading this particular chat between a friend and scammer. Before I even start let me just say it that she was scammed about 1000 Ghana cedis for wanting to double or triple her money. You know what these online things people do and they tell you to bring 100 cedis for 2000 cedis? Yes, that’s what happened to her.
It started from Snapchat. She met the guy advertising over there and claiming he could give her about 2800 for 200 cedis. So my friend texted the guy on Snapchat and after a while, they moved the chat to WhatsApp. The guy told her all she needs to send was 200 cedis and then she’ll receive 2800 cedis. She asked how the whole process was and the guy used some technical words to explain it to her. She just trusted the guy to be legit after that explanation. Oh and the explanation didn’t even make any sense to me.
She sent the 200 cedis and the guys asked her to send an OTP which was going to show on her phone. Without thinking twice, she sent it. He later said the money was pending so she should send her details to her gmail and iCloud for confirmation. At that point, she was skeptical but the guy managed to send her a screenshot of pending 2800 cedis.
She immediately sent all her details after seeing that screenshot. This is where it gets fun yet annoying. He asked her to send extra 200 for confirmation fee and she sent it. And then he asked her to check her account if the money had dropped. After she didn’t find anything, he then told her the system is asking for appreciation fee so that it’ll turn the money into 4800 Ghana cedis.
At that point, my friend was angry because she had already sent 400 cedis but the guy sent a screenshot of pending 4800 cedis. She told the guy she wasn’t having any money and the guy told her to call her friend for a loan if not the 400 cedis will go waste. That was when my friend should have seen it was a scam but she didn’t. She borrowed 400 and sent 200 to the guy.
At this point, they were tracking the money in her account because they had her details so they asked her to empty her account to fasten the process and she did. That was when they blocked her. Almost 1000 cedis gone. My friend called me crying and even though I was tempted to console her, I didn’t. This isn’t the first time she has been scammed. Most of us are like my friend, we have the experience but we never learn from it. I understand that sometimes we are forced to act in the moment but never forget that your brain is there for you to use it.
