I was in Kumasi just last week and when I was about to leave for Takoradi, my mom called me the night before to meet her in Accra. When I got on the bus to Accra, something happened and that even inspired the title of this post.
I like motion a lot because it calms and puts me to sleep so the one constant thing I do anytime I’m traveling is to sleep the minute I sense any movement. It wasn’t so different this time. I slept right after the bus moved until I heard some noise. I tried sleeping through it but it became louder and louder.
I opened my eyes and realized an old man was arguing with almost half of the people in the bus. When I realized that almost all the people he was arguing with were young people, and the other old people were just laughing at whatever he was saying, I got really curious.
On the Kumasi-Accra road, there’s the bridge that has been constructed recently but for so many years, the whole construction was brought to a halt for reasons I don’t know. When the old man saw that the bridge had been built and other construction works were ongoing, he said “finally, satan has been shamed”.
From what I heard them talk about, he meant that satan was the reason why the leaders of the country couldn’t finish up the work they were supposed to do. The leaders were being controlled by satan and that was why the country wasn’t going as planned but thankfully, our prayers are being heard by God. And that’s how come the bridge was built because the leaders have been delivered.
First of all, I was even happy that he acknowledged God but Grandpa come on! Satan?!!! I’m not even going to say anything about this because it’s obvious the people I support in this argument. I don’t know why the old people blame satan and devil for everything that happens. The other time, an old lady blamed the heat in the country on the sins of the youth. Oh Grandma, really?
Sometimes I understand that some people don’t have formal education but this was the case where this man was arguing with all the strength he had to prove his point that satan was behind the bad roads and the halt of the construction works. Meanwhile we were all here when we heard that one of ministers had billions of money literally overflowing in her house but up till now she’s walking about freely.
I don’t know how this whole mentality issue can be solved but I know it would have been heartbreaking to hear my grandma, when she was alive, tell me that she believes the devil is behind inflation or fuel increment or the whole economy crisis.
