Hello everyone, I want to share this dinner bag I made for my friend on her birthday. Gladys has been my friend for 18 years and that makes me a bit emotional because she has been with me through thick and thin. It didn’t take me long to know what to make for her because she loves bags…cute bags. I wanted to make something really special for her so I used a yarn I bought in 2020 during Covid 19 time. It was the last of it kind during that time and since then, I’ve not been able to find anything like that again.
It’s been almost 4 years and when I finally decided to use that yarn for the bag, I felt fulfilled because it’s Gladys I was making the bag for and not just anybody. The kind of bag I planned to make was complicated in my head but then it was easier than I thought actually and I spent about 7 hours on this bag because it’s made up of only single crochet. I also wanted to make it perfect because as I said I was making it for Gladys and also I’m yet to get any yarn like this so there was no room for mistake.
The materials I used were;
• 50g of the special yarn and leftover yarns
• 1.60mm crochet hook
• Sewing needle(improvise)
• A Pair of scissors
Procedure
I started by making the front and back of the bag in the same sizes. I made about 25 chains and then built on it with 15 rows of single crochet. After this, I made the same thing for the other side as well. I did this using the normal yarn.
I then went to the base and the handle. Due to the nature of the bag, I had to make the handle and the base all to together so that I sew them all together.
I made about 7 chains and built on it with the special yarn in single crochet rows. The plan was to use the special yarn for the sides of the bag and the handle so that’s what I did. After making it to the desired length, I switched to the normal yarn to make the base of the bag.
I then brought all the parts together and sewed them with a needle and yarn.
For the base, I sewed it outside out but for the sides, I sewed them inside out and then turned them back in so that the sewn side will be hidden in. For the handle, I sewed the ends together to make a hole and this part wasn’t part of the plan but I filled the hole with cotton just so it wouldn’t become thin when held.
I also didn’t plan on adding the zipper but I just added it to make it more secure. I used a zipper from my mom’s old bags.
The result
Anytime I make something, I’m never surprised at the result because 99% of the time, I know what exactly I’m doing. But this time, I was so surprised at the result I got. I never saw it coming. Most importantly, Gladys loves the bag and can’t wait to receive it.
Now, I feel like roaming the whole Ghana to get more of the special yarns because they really are too nice. Thank you for your time and I hope you like it.
