Family planning in Ghana is legal and I don’t think there is any policy in the constitution that prevents people from doing that. Family planning serves as reproductive health that parents or couples use to control birth or family size. The issue behind this is some of the approaches that some couples do follow which later hunts them down. In this post, we will look at the advantages and disadvantages as far as family planning is concerned. Let’s start with the benefits or advantages of family planning.

To set the ball rolling; family planning serves as a method of reducing child and maternal health. This is achieved through spacing child births and also helps women avoid conceiving during risky situations where they have to stay away from pregnancy.

In addition, family planning is a good strategy for reducing poverty. This is because having a huge size of family indicates that you are going to have a higher burden on yourself and if you are not financially capable of taking care of all the members of your family, you tend to become poor indirectly.

Moreover, there is provision of quality education within the family. This is because having a smaller number of people in a family decreases the burden on parents and hence they tend to provide good care and education to their children. In large numbers of families, we tend to see only a few of the children achieve a higher education level while hindering others because of financial difficulties.

On the contrary, there are some risks or disadvantages involved when it comes to family planning and to start with, the side effects of contraceptives are the first thing I would talk about. Some women do face a lot of side effects after the contraceptive is taken and these include; blood clots, mood swings, and weight gain.

Another disadvantage of family planning is the fact that it can lead one to barrenness whereby after the contraceptive is taken, the woman then finds it difficult to give birth afterward. This can be a hindrance to childbirth after some years and so one needs to be aware of that before deciding to go in for the contraceptive. Other health risk factors are associated with this method of controlling birth; hence, we need to get a good health assessment before going into them.

Some of these methods of family planning include; contraceptive methods, natural family planning such as lactational amenorrhea method, calendar rhythm method, etc, sterilization methods, behavioral methods, and emergency methods such as pills and IUDs.

In my country (Ghana), it is allowed to teach family planning whenever you want to and there are no rules hindering people from that, I don’t know about your country, but do you mind sharing? Then you can do that here in the comment section.
