Start an Evolution

During my free trip to Vancouver, I heard that the University of British Columbia (UBC) has an exceptionally beautiful campus. Since I had nothing planned for the evening, I decided to hop on a bus and explore it. The journey from downtown to the campus was fairly convenient, as the bus takes you directly there, although the ride was a bit long at around 50 minutes.

When I arrived, I realized just how vast the campus is. The size made it difficult to explore on foot, so I could only enjoy a quick stroll and soak in the nighttime beauty of the campus.

The first landmark I came across was the famous Ladner Clock Tower, a historical icon built in 1968. Standing about 36 meters tall, it’s a striking feature of the campus. Behind the clock tower is the university library, renowned for its Baroque-style architecture. What’s particularly interesting about the clock tower is that it changes colors at night, adding a unique touch to the scenery.

Since I visited in January during the winter, some Christmas lights were still up, making the campus feel unexpectedly romantic. UBC’s architecture is an eclectic mix—some buildings boast modern aesthetics, while others preserve historical significance. For example, I happened to pass by a colorful building, which I believe is the modern-looking art center.

One of the more intriguing installations I stumbled upon was a row of tall, blue triangular pillars along a walkway. From afar, I assumed they were part of the Christmas decorations, but as I approached, I noticed something unique—they changed lighting when I got close. It was quite creative! Upon closer inspection, I discovered that each pillar displayed the names of donors and alumni who contributed to the campus development as part of a campaign called “Start an Evolution.” It was essentially a donor recognition board, but the design and presentation were impressively grand.

A great attraction offers different experiences during the day and night. Even though I couldn’t visit UBC in daylight, I found the campus’ nighttime charm to be well worth the trip.
