Part 3/10:

As we navigate the winding roads, we’re met with breathtaking views. The weather is windy, and the drive itself is an adventureβ€”some roads have suffered damage from landslides, leaving us both anxious yet exhilarated. Upon reaching Kalabaka, the town at the base of Meteora, we're greeted by majestic cliffs, and I begin to wonder how we will ascend to the monasteries that seem so high above.

The Hike Begins

Part 1/10:

Hiking to Meteora: A Journey Through Time and Scenery

In the heart of Greece, there exists a breathtaking landscape where nature and history intertwine, known as Meteora. Over the next 24 hours, join us on an adventure as we hike to the top of this UNESCO World Heritage site, characterized by its six stunning monasteries perched atop towering cliffs as if floating in the clouds.

Discovering Meteora

Part 2/10:

Before embarking on this trip, I'd never heard of Meteora, unaware of the beauty that awaited us. John, my boyfriend, and I are exploring Greece by car on an exciting three-week road trip, having just enjoyed Athens' historical treasures. Now, we are ready to dive deeper into the country’s wonders as we embark on a four-hour drive towards these sacred structures, set against an awe-inspiring backdrop of nature.

Part 4/10:

We leave our rental car in town and start our trek through the quaint neighborhood, feeling the excitement building with every step. Despite my apprehensions, the beauty of our surroundings is hypnotic. Equipped with the AllTrails hiking app, we confidently navigate the winding paths that lead to Meteora's monasteries, all while savoring the tranquil solitude of our less-traveled route.

It’s fascinating to learn that this region has a rich historyβ€”hermit monks have inhabited these cliffs since the 9th century, seeking spiritual isolation far from worldly temptations. Our hike, while challenging, offers us some of the most stunning views I've ever encountered. Walking through lush forests, I can't shake the feeling that I'm part of a scene straight out of β€œThe Lord of the Rings.”

Part 5/10:

A Bit of History

Globally recognized for its unique rock formations, Meteora's striking landscape began taking shape over 60 million years ago. Originally, 24 monasteries graced the site; today, only six remain, each rivaling the others in beauty and historical significance. The name "Meteora" translates to "lofty" or "elevated," drawing from the astronomical term for bodies shooting through the atmosphere. The hike eventually leads us to breathtaking viewpoints, reminding us that we're walking 500 meters above the village below.

Part 6/10:

Our excitement peaks as we reach the summit, but we quickly realize that we’ve made a rookie mistake: lacking cash prevents us from entering the monasteries. Having trekked 14 kilometers without stepping foot inside, we resolve to return to our accommodation, determined to try again the next day.

A Second Attempt

Part 7/10:

Equipped with cash and refreshed from a good night’s rest, we set off for the monasteries again. The breathtaking beauty of the landscape calls us back, even though I am unprepared for the dress code required at these religious sites. Fortunately, we improvise and manage to get tickets to the Monastery of Varlaam, only to be stopped at the entrance due to my attire not meeting the standards. Some creativity is in order, as I attempt to drape a sweater around my waist, successfully managing to convince the staff to let me inside.

Part 8/10:

The monasteries are extraordinary. Originally, supplies were hoisted up using a pulley system, while access was primarily through ladders. Now, we ascend the nearly 200 stairs that lead to the Monastery of Varlaam, built in 1350! The extensive history captures my imagination as I reflect on the generations that have walked these same paths.

A Feast for the Senses

After exploring the breathtaking grounds and lighting a candle for my late grandparents in one of the Orthodox churches, we delight in the manicured gardens that adorn the monasteries. The views of the rocky terrain paired with the monastic architecture are nothing short of spellbinding. As we prepare to leave, we decide to take in one last sight of Meteora at sunsetβ€”an experience that is simply unforgettable.

Part 9/10:

The Journey Continues

Our time at Meteora serves as a reminder of the staggering beauty Greece holds. We set our sights on Delphi, another historic site steeped in mythβ€”where Zeus' eagles are said to have met. As we drive through picturesque roads lined with cobblestone streets and cafes in Delphi, we treat ourselves to a much-needed Greek feast. The olive oil, pickled octopus, and fresh bread make for a culinary experience worthy of the stunning visual backdrop.

Part 10/10:

With more islands and adventures ahead on our road trip, join us as we continue exploring Greece’s wonders. Our journey will lead us to Corfu, Zakynthos, and Kefaloniaβ€”all amidst the captivating allure of the Mediterranean.
