Passionate love or traditional social abuse? A review of IT ENDS WITH US by COLLEEN HOOVER.

Hello everyone

I hope you all are doing fine. I am in my summer vacations and was reading a novel recommended by one of my friend who (seemingly) has a pretty nice taste in novels. And now as I have finished reading it, I would say he definitely has a good taste. Lemme share a review of this book with you people.

The book is written by Colleen hoover, and it is a powerful exploration of love, domestic abuse and also personal growth. It covers all of these elements so beautifully that you feel like you are caught in it forever. The novel is filled with complex characters leaving a lasting impact on readers, sometimes you keep thinking about the characters even when the novel ends, this is what happens here.

Plot overview

The main character of the story for me is lily bloom, a young woman who had a difficult childhood experience with usual parent fights and a patriarchal society where his father beats her mother. She moves to Boston in search of a fresh start with the aim of leaving her past behind. There she meets a handsome and successful guy named Ryle Kincaid.

Their relationship starts as a passionate romantic relation. But as the time passed and they get closer the dark sides of ryle's character are revealed. The novel is most catchy for me at the point where hoover shows the true love of ryle for lily but at the same time exposes his dangerous tendencies like short temper. This duality force a thoughtful reader to understand the painful complexity of even some great looking relationships.

Complexity of characters

Lily bloom, who is apparently shown as a strong girl but fighting with her past and facing so many difficulties inside including the remembrance of her past. She remains determined to break that cycle but it seems like she isn't succeeding, that's why she takes her child and part her way from ryle. The ending scene portrays lily saying to her child

It stops here. With me and you. It ends with us

Ryle Kincaid, as I discussed above has a dual role, he had pure intentions for lily but his anger issues made everything so complex, you might feel pity for him at some points in the novel. These are the words of ryle in the novel describing his pity full condition.

There is no such thing as bad people. We're all just people who sometimes do bad things

Atlas Corrigan, lily's first love who is everything a girl wants, gentle, protective, but still he wasn't able to get lily because of some complexities occurred. When lily saw her at the restaurant and remembers the past

I love him, I still do and I always will

Themes

The story is mainly about the objective of lily to break that cycle of family abuse where the child suffers while the parents fight with eachother. She decided to end it by making a great relationship with ryle but it seems like she was unsuccessful in that. So she gets apart while she was pregnant and when she had a baby girl, she was satisfied as it ends with them now.

When I read the novel title, I was totally unaware if it's about stopping a circle of abuse. I thought it is some kind of emotional story of a couple where they die in the end. Lol

Another theme you will see in the novel is self love, as the novel progressed and lessons learned, lily learns to prioritise her own happiness and well being, that's why she decided to leave ryle after her baby gi came into the world. She didn't want her to see what she suffered.

Conclusion

I would say that is a must read novel if any passionate reader is here in this community. This novel is more than just a usual romantic novel. I really liked the way it was written, although the review is written in my traditional way of writing so i am not sure if one will like it or not but if you read the novel, it's full of wonderful dialogues which won't let you close the book for a while. And if you enjoyed the review, let's come and discuss it a bit more in the comments. It would be great.

It's a good book and has had a lot of attention due to the movie, but it's been a few years since it was published, I personally read it a long time ago, I remember that I liked it and it moved me a lot. I felt a bit like Atlas was like a lifeline for Lily and with such a serious subject as the one being discussed In the novel I feel that it fell a little short in my opinion.
