I feel Autumn has arrived early in Germany this year, with temperatures dropping by mid-September. The long-term forecast says that it will continue to get colder. Even though the weather is chilly, this morning brought a crisp and clear autumn sky, which was quite refreshing.
Yesterday, I stopped by a home improvement store during a shopping trip and saw they had a lot of flower bulbs. Planting bulbs is always the last gardening task of the year for me. It's like preparing for spring, a little investment in the future that brings joy when the flowers bloom.
Last year, I bought bulbs in bulk for the community garden as well, but this year, I need to be more selective since I only have my small balcony garden, just a bit more than 2 square meters. Last year, I discovered that the store sold bulbs for Japanese style irises, which remind me of my home country. They grew well in the community garden containers, so I bought 40 bulbs, hoping to share them with some of my Japanese gardening friends. They were only 1.6 euros for 20 bulbs. What a great deal. I also bought the usual suspects: muscari, daffodils, tulips, and a miniature version of alliums, which I absolutely love.
Every year, I plant bulbs and then cover them with cold-tolerant greens like lamb's lettuce and purslane. My favorite gardener, Vera Greutink, calls this the "lasagna." This time of year always reminds me of that delicious-sounding name and I open her book "Edible Paradise", which is my gardening text book for long.
To make room to make my garden "lasagna," I needed to clear out my annuals from spring and summer. Over the past week, I’ve been tidying them up, thanking the plants for the nice spring/summer. There was quite a lot to remove from my little jungle ...
Now that today’s work is done, it feels nice and tidy. I even made space where my daughter and I can sit and have tea.
Next week, I’ll start sowing cold-tolerant greens in small planters, ones that don’t need to be part of the "lasagna". In the middle planter, I’ve already sown spinach and lamb's lettuce seeds, and I marked it with a top of a daikon radish. Maybe I’ll even get some daikon leaves, which we like to mix in rice in Japan.
I’m eager to get started on the bulbs and greens "lasagna," but last year, when we had a warm days in December, some of my bulbs sprouted early and then got damaged in the cold days later on. That didn’t happen in the community garden, so maybe planting deeper would help. I’ll do some research to avoid the same mistake this year.
While I was cleaning up the summer plants, I found a few more strawberries. It looks like they’ll survive the next few days of cooler weather, so I’ll leave them to ripen. I might even get to harvest them in October. It’ll be my first time harvesting strawberries that late in the year. It means if I choose the right varieties, I can enjoy strawberries for nearly half the year. That's great 🍓
I brought the last sunflowers and tomatoes inside from the balcony. Tomatoes ripen indoors if they’re in a sunny spot, so if you still have green ones in your garden, you can bring them inside.
Inside home, I enjoyed a peaceful time with my daughter drawing nearby while I packaged seeds I collected from the balcony. Inspired by @aitommylr, I started growing beans, which have done very well, and I’ve harvested seeds for next year. I’ve also collected morning glory seeds, and perilla seeds should be ready next month.
I moved to Germany in October, and I still remember how beautiful the golden autumn colors were. I hope we get lots of sunny days next month.

ドイツは9月の半ばにはもう気温が下がって、例年よりも早く秋が来たような気がします。長期予報を見ても、気温はここからますます下がるようです。気温は低いものの、今朝はパキッと晴れた秋の青空が広がって気持ちがよかったです。
昨日、車で買い出しに行ったついでにホームセンターに立ち寄ったら球根がたくさん売られていました。球根を植えるのって、一年の最後の庭仕事なんですよね。次の年の春に花が咲くとうれしくて、仕込みというか、投資というか。
去年はコミュニティガーデンの分も含めて大人買いしたのですが、今年は自宅の2平方メートルちょっとのマイクロバルコニーのみなので厳選しないといけません。去年、故郷の日本を思わせる菖蒲の球根が売られていることを知って、コミュニティガーデンではうまく育ったので、日本人のお友達に分けたら喜んでくれるかなとたくさん買ってきました。20個で1.6ユーロ（250円ほど）というありがたいお値段です。その他は定番のムスカリ、水仙、チューリップ、あと個人的に大好きなアリウムのミニチュア版を買ってきました。
私は毎年球根を植えて、その上に耐寒性のあるラムズレタスやスベリヒユといった葉物を植えます。大好きなガーデナーのVera Greutinkさんがラザニアメソッドと呼んでいて、この時期になると毎年このおいしそうな名前を思い出します。
ラザニアを作るには春夏の一年草に場所を開けてもらう必要があります。この一週間、時間を見ては、今年もありがとうねと整理をしていました。ジャングルになっていたので抜いた植物は結構な量になりました😅
今日作業が終わってすっきり。子供とお茶を飲む場所もできました。
来週は、大急ぎでラザニアにしなくてよい小さなプランターに耐寒性のある葉物の種をまきはじめます。真ん中のプランターにはほうれん草とラムズレタスの種をまいたので目印に大根の頭を植えてあります。大根菜もとれるかな？
球根と葉物のラザニアもすぐに作り始めたいものの、去年、12月の暖かくなった日に球根が芽を出して、その後の寒さで枯れてしまったので、時期を見計らいたくもあります。コミュニティーガーデンでは同じ問題は起きなかったので、深く植えるとよいのかもしれません。どうしたら去年のミスを防げるかリサーチしてみようと思います。
春夏の植物を整理していたらいちごがいくつかなっているのを見つけました。いちごは向こう数日の気温には耐えられそうなのでそのまま色づくのを待つことにしました。収穫は10月に入ってからかな、人生初の10月に収穫するいちごです。うまく品種を選ぶと春から半年近く楽しめることになります。
夏の名残のひまわりとトマトはバルコニーから家の中に持ってきました。トマトは日の当たる屋内に置いておくと赤くなるので、緑のトマトがまだ庭にあるという人は収穫して家の中に持ってきても。
家の中では子供が絵を描く横で、バルコニーからとれた種を袋詰めする幸せなひとときを楽しみました。@aitommylr さんのインゲンに触発されて、うちでも育て始めたインゲンが好調で、来年用の種もとれました。あとは朝顔。続いて、来月には紫蘇の種がとれそうです。
ドイツで生活を始めたのが10月で、秋の黄金色が美しかったのを覚えています。来月晴れの日が多いといいな。
