Micro Balcony Garden Journal 2025 - Jan 19 /

This week’s Garden Journal is coming a little late as I slept until late in the morning after attending a two-day woodworking course.

Here in Germany, the temperatures have been quite low, but the days feel sunnier, and the increasing daylight hours bring a sense of excitement. Today is another clear, sunny day—hooray!

Sunny Balcony

Despite the sunshine, the cold temperatures mean slow plant growth. Even so, the yuzu and kumquat trees are holding up well on the balcony, even in 0°C weather. I’m on the hunt for more hardy citrus plants, especially something like a Bitcoin orange or a mandarin. Every visit to a flower shop or gardening center pulls me toward the citrus section, but it’s tough to find anything frost-resistant other than kumquats. I’m planning to explore online options next.

This week, I also repotted my Christmas cactus. Its blooming season is over, so it felt like the right time after a few years. The main plant moved to a larger pot, and I planted the cuttings I’d rooted in water into the bonsai pot where the mother plant had been.

Sorry for the tiny pot, Christmas Cactus ...

A Fresh Start for the Cactus

The Hive fig plants are making progress! The third true leaf has emerged from the fastest-growing one The serrated edges give it a proper fig-like look, which reassures me since I was skeptical at first. But now that its siblings have sprouted and true leaves are forming, I feel confident calling it a fig.

Hive Fig Progress

During a weekend trip to Berlin, I visited a large bookstore and picked up a postcard of green figs that reminded me of Croatian Fig. I bought it as a good luck postcard. I also found a book about growing plants on balconies, including fruit trees like figs ... and note books with bees and plants, a handy book about how to read constellation ☺️

Balcony Gardening Finds

Indoors, I’m continuing to grow microgreens and sprouts. This winter, I’ve used so many microgreens that I’ve bought less salad greens than usual. The pea shoots shown in the photos below are an experiment in growing without a substrate. While they do fine as the roots intertwine, they seem to grow faster on kitchen paper, which retains more moisture.

I did smudging on the balcony on the full moon night. It was a cold night, but spending 30 minutes watching the fire felt refreshing. Until the new moon, I plan declutter by letting go of unused belongings.

Wishing you all a wonderful Sunday. Happy Gardening!

What's a bitcoin orange?🤔

I'd love to grow kumquat tree so I can preserve the fruit in salt, but I keep on thinking it won't survive in the cold weather as citrus plants are more suited in the warm climate aren't they?

I don't know exactly which orange it is. Sometimes people say Mikan in Japan (mandarin in Japanese) to implicitly mention bitcoin 😊

It might be too cold for England but a granny hosted us in a snowy area in Japan had a nice big pot of kumquat. We were snacking the fruits on the tree while we were at her place. It was kept in the entrance of the house when it’s cold (I guess it was around 10-15 degrees in the entrance). So I thought it’s possible to do the same here, where we have similar temperatures. It's dark in winter in Germany but her place is also more like snowy area in winter ❄️

I'll see my kumquat makes fruits this year. I would like the salted one you mentioned 😊

In my life I had never seen a cactus like that Christmas cactus. I like the way it grows, the way it looks like its leaves have been glued together, it is as if they fit together.

Really!? It’s one of the most popular plants around Christmas season in Japan. I remember my grandparents and my mother had them. Also it’s everywhere in this season in Germany too. It might be something in cold winter countries. I wish I can send a branch to you via Hive blockchain 😉

Being in a tropical country, maybe that's why you haven't seen it here and I wish you could send it to me.

I like the little walnut cradle :)
