This morning, I harvested some Green Zebra tomatoes, which I've been growing this year. When I laid them out on the kitchen counter, they looked so appealing that I couldn't resist taking a photo. I'm absolutely smitten with their vibrant green stripes and those proud little stems standing tall. As I snapped the photo, I found myself reflecting on how one of the greatest joys of gardening is the ability to grow unique varieties that catch your interest—something you don't often find at the supermarket.

Most of the vegetables sold in supermarkets are chosen with a focus on transportability, productivity, and flavors that appeal to the general public. As a result, the selection tends to be somewhat limited.

In contrast, when you grow your own vegetables through gardening, you're not bound by these constraints. Of course, there are considerations like space, time, and the hope for a good yield, but ultimately, you have the freedom to grow whatever you like. You can choose rare varieties or those with distinctive flavors that align with your personal preferences. For instance, the Green Zebra tomatoes I harvested this morning are known for their unique appearance and refreshing tartness—qualities that make them stand out. They're not something you'd often come across; the only time I've seen them available locally was from an organic farmer selling seedlings.

The reason I started growing Green Zebras dates back to last year. When I mentioned to my tomato-loving daughter that there are green tomatoes, she immediately wanted to try making her own green ketchup. So, we decided to grow it together.

As it turns out, we've been enjoying these tomatoes so much that we're eating them straight off the vine, and I'm not sure if there will be enough left to make that green ketchup. But I'm grateful to my daughter for sparking this fun experience. The flavor has been such a hit that I'm already thinking of growing them again next year.

Yesterday, while scrolling through Instagram, I came across a post about a tomato variety called Ananas Noire, which is green on the outside and red on the inside. The name translates to "Pineapple Black Tomato"... intriguing, right? My daughter was equally fascinated, so it's now on the list of varieties to try next year.

The ability to grow and harvest special vegetables with my own hands is one of the things I love most about gardening. I've long had a dream of discovering and cultivating delicious, often-overlooked varieties that aren't of much interest to commercial farming, and sharing them with family and friends. Green Zebra tomatoes might be relatively well-known, and I'm still growing them on a small balcony, sharing the harvest with my family, but perhaps this is a small step toward that dream.

There are so many things I love about gardening—saving seeds, dividing plants, growing just enough for the family—and I'm starting to think this might make for a good series of posts.

今朝、今年育てているグリーンゼブラという緑の縞模様のあるトマトを収穫して、台所で並べたらいい感じだったので写真を撮りました。この色と模様と、くわーーーっとっ立っているヘタにめろめろです。写真を撮って、改めて「興味を持った珍しい品種を育てられるって、ガーデニングの醍醐味だよなあ」と思い、この投稿を書き始めました。

スーパーマーケットで売られている野菜の多くは輸送性、生産性、そして一般的に受け入れられる味を重視して作られています。そのため選ばれる品種は限られてしまいがちです。

一方で、ガーデニングを通じて自分で育てる野菜には、そのような制約はありません。スペースや時間の制約、いっぱいとれてほしいなどの欲望もありますが、基本的には好きなものを作りたい放題です。自分の好みや興味に合わせて、珍しい品種や個性的な味わいを持つ野菜を選んで育てられます。今朝収穫したグリーンゼブラのような緑のトマトは、独特な見た目と爽やかな酸味が魅力ですが、ほとんど見かけません。地元のオーガニックの農家が苗を売っていたのを見かけたことがあるくらいです。

グリーンゼブラを育てている経緯はというと、去年、同じくトマト好きの子供に「緑のトマトがあるんだよ」というと「緑のケチャップを作ってみたい」とのことで育てることになりました。

珍しさのあまり、どんどんそのまま食べてしまっているので、緑のケチャップを作れるほど残るのかは謎ですが、楽しい体験のきっかけを作ってくれた子供に感謝しています。好みの味ということもあり、来年も育てたいと思っているほどです。

昨日はインスタグラムを眺めているとAnanas Noire Tomatoという外側が緑で中が赤いトマトを紹介している人がいました。名前の意味するところはパイナップル黒トマト・・・!これにも子供が興味津々だったので、来年育てたい品種のリストに入れておきました。

こうして特別な野菜を自分の手で育て、収穫する喜びを味わえるのは、ガーデニングの好きなところの一つです。私には長らく「おいしいのに商業農業では興味を持たれず忘れられている品種を発掘して育てて、家族や友人と分かち合う」という夢があります。グリーンゼブラは比較的知られている品種だし、まだ小さなバルコニーで育てて家族と分かち合うレベルですが、今回のグリーンゼブラも夢への小さな一歩なのかもしれません。

ガーデニングには、種をとったり株分けしたりできる、家族の適量を栽培できるなど、まだまだ好きなところがいっぱいあって、これ、シリーズにしてもいいかもなんて思い始めました。

Do these different varieties have different taste and health benefits and do they require different climatic conditions to grow them?

It has fine fresh sourness. Not like red to purple tomatoes with Umami taste nor yellow to orange with sweet taste. It grow well in Germany. The seed is from a German organic producer so they might picked it with an intention that it grows well in our climate. I don't know about the health benefit ... but certainly it gives me energy and make me smile 😁

It's so limited in the supermarkets, isn't it? New varieties make it far more exciting.
