In the midway between the Bernese Oberland's noble town of Gstaad and the Fribourg town of Gruyères lies Château-d'Oex,located at 958 m above sea level which, thanks to its favorable microclimate, is also evolved as a hot air balloon metropolis. From Gstaad in the direction of Montreux in about 30 min. by train you arrive in the small charming village.
Numerous apartments and hotels have been built here, which serve as a place to stay for tourists. Certainly in the old center of the village you can see the charming characteristic houses from the 19th century.
Breathtaking landscapes in winter as well as all over the year with steep rock faces, perfect for free time activities such as climbing or paragliding. Hiking, walking, and golfing complete the numerous offers in Château-d'Oex.
On an exposed hill south of the village is the reformed church of Saint-Donat. It was built in the 14th century on the site of the former castle, with the fortress tower converted into a bell tower. The church was mostly destroyed during the fire in 1800. From here you have a beautiful panoramic view to the Alps.
When you travel in the area do not miss also the the nature reserve Pierreuse one of the largest nature reserves in the French-speaking part of Switzerland with a unique flora and fauna can also be visited in the near surroundings.
