Learning to Read Digital News in Times of Global Crisis

Hi Hivers!

One of the activities that I like to do in my daily workday, is to sit down and prioritize in my agenda the activities of the week:

  • Organization and executive management of my personal business.
  • Design my running routine and other workouts.
  • Organize the menu for the week.
  • Shopping.
  • Paying the outstanding bills.
  • Cleaning the house.
  • To be in touch with family and friends.
  • Check my personal mail and some social networks.
  • Etc, etc. etc.

When I review some social networks, I include the news associated with of the region where I currently reside, and those of the international boundaries. Normally I do this activity at the end of the afternoon and randomly, that’s mean: I don't go deep into ALL the news.

Perhaps many of you are wondering two things:

Why at the end of the day, and not at the beginning of the day as most people do, and why randomly, if all the news are important?

Well, since a few months ago, I have been constantly applying the theory that says: “We become more than 40% of the people we constantly interact with”. It has not been easy to do so; but the results have been very positive, and although we don't believe it, there are “inoffensive attitudes” that harm our lives in the medium and long term, because repetitive behaviors end up becoming habits.

For example: if we surround ourselves with people who constantly bet unconsciously with fail attitudes like:

  • Why be efficient in my work, if the salary reward is too poor?
  • Why to eat only one hamburger if I can eat three?
  • When I faced with a situation of injustice or latent vulnerability, the best thing to do is to stay on the sidelines and turn a blind eye because it is something that does not affect me directly.
  • Although I am not a gossip person, I think the best thing to do is to repeat what my coworkers said during the meeting with the board members.

And I could go on listing the attitudes of people who are slowly going down to the “fail road”.
Anyway, with the results that I obtained with the theory that I named “The 40% and so on Theory”, I decided to choose what kind of “news” I should delve into, and at what time of the day I should read them.

The Starting Point

I started by considering the fact that Not all news is news, even if they have a news headline because unfortunately with the globalization, the online protagonism was born mostly dominated by emotional deficiencies and promoted by the impetuous need to sell sensationalism, beyond to create a sense of integral progress that adds value in the human beings.
With this consideration always present on my mind, I established as a basic rule that If a news item does not contribute anything positive to my lifestyle and don't push me towards where I want to go in my future, then I shouldn't read it. I won't spend my time (which sometimes are few due to the amount of activities that I do daily) with something that, instead of adding, will subtract energies in my life. It doesn't mean that I only read publications where everything is rosy like a fairy tale, NO WAY! What I mean is that I have learned to manage wisely the words and images that feed my spirit.

I learned to apply the method of visual sweep, where you can read everything but focusing on keywords that reflect: confidence, balance, order, respect, justice and all those that really leave us some equanimity insight and contribute with us to be better human beings.
Obviously is sometimes difficult to find “news” that gathers all these characteristics, but it is not impossible because when we manage to combine a series of basic elements that we have when reading news we can obtain satisfactory results.

The 3 basic elements that I commonly conjugate are the following:

1) Type of profiles and accounts that I follow: I avoid following accounts with constantly feeds thunderous, controversial words, full of high-flown elements that at first glance gleam in my eyes and create some feelings of uncertainty and anxiety during the first microseconds of reading.

2) Type of news that I read: as I mentioned above, I read the vast majority of the news, because unfortunately we can't isolate ourselves from the world to live in a comfortable bubble. It is important to read to know the “reality”, the difference will always rely on the reality that I decide to deepen and digest to generate an effect in my life.

3) Types of images that I see: with the evolution of the applications, I decided to select the option of NOT downloading or viewing multimedia files automatically, because I have always thought: why do I want to see bloody or violent images if the headline and the news itself describe the events? Is this multimedia file really going to help me to become a better person? What can this image contribute to my current life and my future goals? Of course! Unless I want to study to become a forensic scientist or some other related career, the answer would be: yes, but up to the moment of writing these lines I am still connected and committed to my profession “Electrical Engineer” and my vocation “Integral health and nutrition”.

I usually read the “news” in the late afternoon, because as I tend to read most of the news I prefer to have a good cup of coffee in the morning to start the day with good vibes and lots of energy, and leave for the afternoon the “emotional cups of coffee” that go directly to my spirit, and sometimes they don’t have the best flavor or aroma.

Anyway, everything in life is about to take a decision or make a choice, so I choose to be a responsible person. As I decide carefully the food that enters into my mouth to fill my physical body with vitality, I also decide appropriately the food that will enter into my eyes and ears, because them will affect my mental-emotional health and my spiritual body.
