One of the things I enjoy observing in my kittens, is their grooming ritual, because they are inspired by this behavior that they perform daily. Nature is so wise that it provided them with a tongue with special characteristics to be able to remove from their body all the particles that they consider should be removed and thus feel clean.
Of my three kittens, only Nevado does not completely achieve this function, due to his special condition of Down Syndrome, however, he tries with a little difficulty, but the important thing is that he has the instinct to groom himself. The rest of his grooming is left to me.
The other two; Lupe, the black and white, and Lucky, the gray, are experts in everything that concerns the daily grooming ritual. No matter where they are, they settle in as comfortably as possible, and the grooming process begins.
But what does this ritual consist of? Well, grooming is a process where cats, using their tongues, remove all particles of dirt from their bodies. They wet their front paws to clean their face, ears and head. The tongue is their unique tool to achieve this cleaning ritual, and of course, saliva is the complement. This organ has pointed and rough papillae that perfectly fulfill this function.
Cats are very neat animals, it is enough to see that they do not like their basic needs to be exposed and they tend to cover them with something, mainly dirt.
They do not need constant baths, their grooming ritual is enough, and this tends to provide them with a lot of relaxation, that is why we can notice that once they finish, they fall asleep.
In grooming there are also important signs, if a kitten does not groom itself, it is because it is sick, depressed or weak and it is time to check what is happening in its organism... on the contrary, if it grooms itself very frequently in the same area, it is a sign of some discomfort, and it is indicating that we should check that area because it can be indicative of fleas, a wound, and in the case of the genital area, it can present symptoms of cystitis. Frequent grooming is also a symptom of stress, either due to anxiety or an experience that could generate a lot of fear.

Una de las cosas que disfruto observar en mis gatitos, es su ritual de aseo, porque se inspiran en esta conducta que realizan a diario. La naturaleza es tan sabia que les proporcionó una lengua con características especiales para poder quitar de su cuerpo todas las partículas que ellos consideran que deben retirarse y de esa manera sentirse limpios.
De mis tres gatitos, sólo Nevado no logra por completo esta función propia, debido a su condición especial de Síndrome de Down, sin embargo, él lo intenta con un poquito de dificultad, pero lo importante es que tiene el instinto de acicalarse solo. El resto de su aseo, queda de mi parte.
Los otros dos; Lupe, el blanco con negro, y Lucky, el gris, son unos expertos en todo lo que al ritual de limpieza diaria, se refiere. No importa el lugar donde se encuentren, ellos se instalan lo más cómodos posible, y allí inicia el proceso de acicalamiento.
¿Pero en qué consiste este ritual? Pues bien, el acicalamiento viene a ser un proceso donde los gatos, usando su lengua, van retirando de su cuerpo toda partícula de suciedad. Humedecen sus patitas delanteras para limpiar su carita, orejas, y cabeza. La lengua es su herramienta única para lograr este ritual de limpieza, y por supuesto, la saliva es el complemento. Este órgano posee papilas puntiagudas y ásperas que cumplen perfectamente esa función.
Los gatos son animales muy aseados, basta con ver que no les agrada que sus necesidades básicas queden expuestas y tienden a cubrirlas con algo, principalmente la tierra.
Ellos no necesitan baños constantes, con su ritual de acicalamiento es suficiente, y éste tiende a brindarles mucha relajación, por eso podemos notar que una vez que finalizan, se quedan dormidos.
En el acicalamiento también hay señales importantes, si un gatito no se acicala, es porque se encuentra enfermo, deprimido o débil y es momento de revisar qué pasa en su organismo… por el contrario, si se acicala con mucha frecuencia una misma zona, es señal de alguna molestia, y nos están indicando que debemos revisar esa zona porque puede ser indicativo de pulgas, una herida, y en el caso de la zona genital, puede presentar síntomas de cistitis. También el acicalamiento frecuente es síntoma de estrés, bien sea por ansiedad o alguna experiencia que le pudiera generar mucho miedo.
