Heading towards the Nîmes Coliseum and other Adventures in the south of France

in #hive-196308last year

Hi all, dear Hivers ! Here I am on my way home, and while I'm on the train, I'm continuing on the topic of Roman antiquities. But that's not very strange, because because of its proximity to Italy, the south of France - even more than the rest of the country - is full of antiquities, remains and ruins from that era.

It was during a one-hour stopover in Nîmes that I was able to get close to these Roman-era arenas. Unfortunately, and I might as well tell you straight away, I wasn't able to get inside (the stage was being dismantled for a concert).

It's great to have been able to get a bit closer to this magnificent monument, but let's go back a few days to the charming town of Arles, which I'll tell you about soon...

IMG_5486.JPG

We went to an excellent restaurant for dinner and even though I didn't take photos of all my dishes, I can't recommend this address enough.

IMG_5487.JPG

IMG_5488.JPG

The Italian food was delicious and after some excellent traditional dishes accompanied by a very good wine, we had a Norwegian omelette to share. It was a dish I had never tried before and would definitely try again in the future. You have an icy heart with a vanilla flavor and on top, a sort of meringue that is flambéed with rum just before serving. Simply delicious !

But let's quickly go round the few places I was able to see in less than an hour in Nîmes...

IMG_6050.JPG

Here's the train station and the first church I saw on my way to the arenas, which is very close to the station. If you've got a bit of time when you're passing through this town, it's a really good idea to go there.

IMG_6053.JPG

Just at the end of this long avenue and just before the Roman historic site, you come across this fountain topped by several statues, also of ancient inspiration.

I invite you to enlarge the first image to see what's on the head of the main statue...!

IMG_6086.JPG

Here, it's the coat of arms of the town of Nîmes, a crocodile and a palm tree. I don't know what it means yet, but a quick search will tell you more !

IMG_6101.jpg

IMG_6060.JPG

IMG_6089.JPG

But here's the Colisée of Nîmes ! It's a huge building, and you can't help but be in awe of its architectural marvels.

The building is quite large in diameter and takes around twenty minutes to complete. I won't be able to tell you why some of the vaults are open while others aren't, and as for the date of construction, I suggest you go and see for yourself: I've had very little connection during this trip and that's why I haven't replied to some people's comments for several days... but don't worry, once I get home I'll update the site ;-)

IMG_6076.jpg

IMG_6081.JPG

IMG_6082.JPG

This was the closest I could get, much to my regret, but in any case, I had the impression that visits weren't open today. So even if I'd had more time, I wouldn't have been able to get inside.

I hope you enjoyed this article for #MarketFriday, the community initiated by @dswigle, and thank you for taking the time to visit !

What a very delicious Italian food and surely it tasted so good with wine. I so love the place my friend and this is something worth going for. Happy Market Friday!

Thank you 😇

There you go again, tracking down antiquities, how lucky are you, to live around some well-stocked historical sites? I actually did not know that they had so many Roman antiquities~ admittedly, you wowed the heck right out of me!

You are so considerate and always take us out for a bite to eat, lunch or dinner, but, you always manage to feed us well! I like the atmosphere! So lovely! Anything flambeed is a winner, but, in this case, it looks delectable. I have to believe it was delicious. I do like the train stations in towns, many are older and leave a trail of history behind. I have a weakness for fountains!! That we have pieces like this still around is amazing. Building likenesses is second best. Did I mention I love fountains?

The coat of arms? I looked it up and it represents Egypt in submission. (The crocodile is chained to the palm tree) The palm tree is an ancient sign of victory. They have a Colosseum there! I am in awe!! What a wonderful moment! I am so sorry it was closed off, but, you got to view the Colosseum in its ancient magnificence! Sorry I took so long to answer, I wanted to enjoy the post. :) Thank you! It was worth the wait for me!!!

#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers' markets, and eventually branched out and evolved over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, and even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact that these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world.

Thank you for being a part of #MarketFriday

One of the good thing about being so surrounded by those beautiful things, is that I was actually very conscious that there were marvels and I was looking at them not as basic things or stuff. But I believe we’ve not a basic look on things anyway ^^ !

This Norvegian omelette was really something to try and I’ve to say there is a before and an after in my culinary adventures.. this was simple and complex, hot and cold at the same time and so it was perfect... like life finally :)

Oh, thank you for looking more about the coat of arm, I was sure you’ll search about ! This is an interesting story, I also need to search more about it !

Thank you dear Denise for your detailed visit and precise look on our #MarketFriday and one the world in general :)

Thank you! Your writing always makes me want to look under the surface. Have a great evening!

😇 Thank you @dswigle !

To say the truth, when I answered you, I was in the metro (ligne 4 to be exact) and when I read it again, I saw that I completely forgot to tell you about fountains ... I really love those !!!

You can maybe check the one in Lyon on the "Place des Terreaux" maybe my favorite as I grew up just near by :)

Have a lovely day !

I think the most interesting part of this for me was the meal. The yummy sounding omelette and the dessert.
You're having the most splendid time with this exploration @anttn and I couldn't be happier to go on this tour with you, howbeit virtually.

Have a most wonderful weekend.🤗

Thank you a lot for your visit and kind words here @jhymi !

I hope you had a good weekend as well 😇

take care !

This was just splendid. I'm wondering if you got more pictures of antiques; I'd definitely love to see them:)

Here, it's the coat of arms of the town of Nîmes, a crocodile and a palm tree

On second thought, coats of arms always have a strange touch to it. Ours is an eagle with horses and a garden.

I'm glad you showed us this part of your journey. I enjoyed reading.

I'm wondering if you got more pictures of antiques; I'd definitely love to see them:)

Hehe, I've plenty more for the coming days hehe, went to a dedicated museum in Arles 😉

Thank you again @wongi 😇

This is good news then. I'd be anticipating 😊
