Song 2 is one of Britpop's great anthems, but there were times when Blur's releases flopped. It was 1997 and the British included the song on the band's fifth studio album of the same name. Let's take a look at the situation. Kurt Cobain died three years ago and the dominance of grunge and its way of spreading social unrest has long disappeared. In this context, Damon Albarn and his band wanted to think about Britpop, which defined how the Seattle movement fell.

The single, released in April 1997, was originally written as a parody to ridicule the grunge scene that was popular in the United States in the early 1990s. Blur wanted to release short, simple songs with simple choruses that satirized the elements used. by bands like Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam. In fact, I have many fond memories of Smells Like Teen Spirit, the signature song of Kurt Cobain's band. Initially, the band did not want to release the song because it was too short and simple, but an American record company fell in love with the song and convinced them to release it. Song number 2 is an unfinished song and was given the title to work on in the recording studio. But over time they decided to keep it. Song number 2 says it all. It is 2 minutes and 2 seconds long and debuted at number 2 on the UK Singles Chart in its native United Kingdom.

The band's bassist, Alex James, spoke about the recording process in an interview with Q Magazine. This is after a night of fun. “I remember the day I was sweating profusely and running like crazy. It was very sunny up there. We don't think about anything. The chorus features two distorted bass notes and a lead vocal from Damon. "We always played without thinking, but we didn't like it."

The lyrics make no sense and respond to the tendency to string together random phrases without a common thread, despite all interpretations. It is pure and simple improvisation, and the only thing that unites it is the famous "Woo-Hoo" that was popular in the country where the song was born. Never before has there been a song with such a clear intention of parody. To everyone's surprise, but especially the band's, it became one of Blur's biggest hits, nominated for Best Single at the Brit Awards and named one of the 15 best songs of all time by BBC Radio. To this we must add the popularity of the video directed by Sophie Muller, who directed Kylie Minogue, Sade, Strokes and other great Shakira clips.
