The second single from the 1997 album Sehnsucht, called 'Du hast', was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1999. It also appeared in the film The Matrix (1999), the comedy Se les risen los fumes (2001) and in an episode from Gilmore Girls.
The success lies in the style of the song and the enigmatic lyrics, which create multiple meanings.
Rammstein's success, like most of their songs, lies in being in German, the band's native language. The theme is simple: marriage as an institution, but the band plays with the pronunciations to obtain a different result.
The lyrics are a declaration of marriage vows that the other person refuses to fulfill, such as committing to be together until death do them part.
Pronunciation is key to completely changing the meaning. In short, by focusing on the 's' in 'hast', the translation would be 'Du hasst mich', which means 'you hate me'.
The pronunciation reflects a different meaning: 'Do you want until death does not come to both of you?'
They both said "Nein" instead of "I do", thus showing their disagreement in using those words during the wedding ceremony. In an interview with the German magazine Musik Express, Lindemann said that the criticism was mainly towards the conception of the 'eternal' in traditional marriage.
