At some point in most people's lives, they come around to making the decision to live life on their own terms by prioritizing their own needs and happiness. These days it is almost impossible to listen to the sound of your own thoughts without everyone raining their two cents down your head. Every corner you look on social media, there is someone who knows better waiting to give you some life changing advice. To remain true to yourself and values, we must learn to filter through the noise, and listen to the one that matters the most.
Decentering, in this context, means having the discernment to determine when to value public opinion, explore other guiding principles, or solely rely on your own counsel. Decentering the opinion of the public does not mean ignoring or dismissing the ideas and perspectives of others. Instead, we are encouraged to take a step back to truly find what we want and what resonates best.
It is almost impossible to not get influenced to make one silly or serious decision based on people's recommendations and social media influencing. While it is absolutely necessary to keep an open mind, we must not let the narratives and experiences of others to hold undue influence over our actions, thoughts, and decisions. It is important to recognize that while public sentiment can offer valuable insights and even life changing opportunities, it should not be the sole determinant of our choices.
