In life there are dangers everywhere including as it pertains to tech. Robotics and AI are no different. There will never be a perfect system or tech for that matter. Not to mention bad human actors creating havoc since the beginning of creation.
Here's a brief overview of some of the dangers that come with the development and use of robotics.
Job displacement: As robots become more capable, they may replace human workers in a variety of industries, leading to job loss and economic disruption. This trend will not end but start to accelerate. It’s already happening in real time see Amazon, Walmart, etc.
Safety risks: Robotics can be dangerous if not designed and used properly, leading to accidents and injuries. Without the proper training and guidance these machines could become walking land mines. Not to mention a danger to the public safety.
Cybersecurity risks: Robots can be vulnerable to hacking and other forms of cyber attack, potentially compromising sensitive information or even causing physical harm. Being connected to the net exposes everything. Imagine a group of autonomous devices hacked and controlled by a rogue actor.
In a society that lacks ethics many ethical concerns can reverberate. Remember it is not the tech that is the problem but the users themselves.
Look no further than the military industrial complex.
Military and weaponization: As robotics technology advances, there is concern that it could be used to develop autonomous weapons or other military applications, raising questions about the ethics and safety of such uses.
Lack of any oversight is also a big issue that faces many industries world wide. When something goes wrong who will be held accountable.
Accountability and liability: With increasing automation and reliance on robots, there is concern about who is responsible when something goes wrong, and how to hold robots or their operators accountable. Autonomous vehicles in the Bay Area come to mind.
This leads to my final point of the topic. What are people going to do if you have an app/robot that supplements All needs of user?
Dependence: Over-reliance on robotics could lead to a decrease in human skills and knowledge, making us more vulnerable and less able to adapt and solve problems. Could also create a society the does nothing and lacks the ambition to progress.
Although I believe the benefits outweigh the dangers we must start having these conversations. The brainiac at Tesla is not going to wait for proper guidance. As well as the many startups participating in this field.
