Welcome in this post I share my casting experience as you may guess from the title things didn't work out, but I ain't quitting, I learned and will adapt.
I gave it a go on the weekend and it was a bit of a rough patch nothing seemed to be going my way this last weekend and this casting fail was a part of it but there was a lot more like me breaking one of my printers, I ordered a part for it and should be able to fix it when it comes in so that's no biggie, and I still have 3 functioning machines.
The reason for my failure with the casting is bad preparation and also some design oversights, but we get into that a bit later in this post.
It came with this safety sheet and it basically said don't inhale the particles, that was a real bummer because initially I wanted to snort some lines of the stuff to be one with the metals.
I got a casting kit from amazon came with a few more things but this is all I needed for my first trial.
My idea was putting my casting mold pieces with my casting support system in the bottom of this 3d printed square I used as a single sided flask I packed it with casting sand and then would flip it over, this way I could get maximum detail and an even base.
Things didn't work out great for one the wood I used was too thin and with the weight of the sand the bottom had some give making it harder to make it totally even but I settled but then I got into my second problem extraction, as you can see bellow I mushed up the mold when I took out the pieces, I then tried again with the stamping method but like I mentioned my work surface was not very sturdy and I had slightly better luck but still sub par results, also it seems my circuit breakers could not handle the printers and my electric kiln running at the same time I was gonna base the crucible with borax but like I mentioned it was too much power demand on my electrical system, so moving forward I will have to turn off the printers and other power hungry appliances while I am trying to cast.
I will be taking the lessons I learned and trying my hand at it again, I had ideas to overcome the challenges of a a clean extraction, one was to add 4 holes with the one in the middle holding a magnet and have a tool that will latch on and take out the piece another idea is to heat insert a nut so that after I can put in a screw and have a handle of sorts to pull it out.
Another idea is to make a rig that will press and extract the pieces evenly but that is something I will have to try later on.
There is some other methods that I will be trying later too like lost wax casting that may be able to deliver better results and perhaps at better scale with the use of a casting tree, the only issue with lost wax casting is that it's not reusable it's only good for a single cast as you burn out the mold negative leaving behind a plaster mold that will have to be broken up after casting.
