11. September 2001 So berichtete die ARD
Ich kann mich noch sehr gut an den Tag erinnern. Ich war im Büro wo ich normalerweise immer mal wieder online schaute, was sich so tut. Aber an diesem Tag war ich ziemlich beschäftigt und hatte daher keine Zeit fürs Internet. Am Nachmittag kam eine Freundin zu Besuch. Sie meinte ob wir schon von dem Unglück in den USA gehört hätten. Nein hatten weder ich noch meine Frau.
Wir haben daraufhin kurz den Fernseher angemacht und geschaut, was da an Berichten kam. Als unsere Freundin dann gegangen war, war für mich nicht mehr an Arbeit im Büro zu denken (war ja selbständig und der Auftrag musste einfach warten).
Laufend kamen Berichte, naja, das was eben bis dahin bekannt war. Es war unvorstellbar, dass da Flugzeuge ins Worldtradecenter und ins Pentagon gesteuert worden waren. Meine Kinder (10 und 9 Jahre) schauten natürlich auch. Aber nach einiger Zeit meinte meine Tochter, sie wolle das nicht mehr sehen.
Nach dem Fall der Mauer war da so ein Gefühl: Alles wird gut. Klar gab es auch zwischen 89 und 2001 Kriege und Unruhen. Aber es war auch die Zeit der Abrüstung, das Ende des Kalten Krieges, der ja vor unserer Haustüre statt gefunden hatte.
New York war einerseits weit weg und doch so nah. Nach und nach wurden mehr Informationen bekannt. Die Welt und vor allem die USA waren in Aufruhr. Es folgten Anthrax-Anschläge und auch in Deutschland wurde befürchtet, dass etwas passieren könnte.
Die Folgen sind bekannt: Jagd auf Bin Laden, Irak-Krieg, Afghanistan, ISIS oder IS, Anschläge in Madrid, London, Paris, ... Auch der Anschlag in Berlin auf den Weihnachtsmarkt kann damit in Zusammenhang gebracht werden.
War es naiv nach dem Zusammenbruch der UDSSR, dem Fall der Mauer, Ende des Kalten Krieges an eine friedlichere Zukunft zu glauben? Ja, im Nachhinein betrachtet war es bestimmt naiv.
Aber was sollten wir unseren Kindern erzählen? Was soll ich, sollen wir, unseren Enkelkindern erzählen? Glaubt nicht an eine friedliche Welt? Die Menschen sind böse, habgierig und machtbesessen?
Ja, das ist die eine Seite, die dunkle Seite die wohl in jedem Menschen steckt. Aber da gibt es auch die helle, die freundliche, die gute Seite. Und jeder kann und muss für sich entscheiden, welche Seite die Oberhand bekommt.

I can still remember the day very well. I was in the office where I usually check what's going on online from time to time. But that day I was pretty busy so I didn't have time for the internet. In the afternoon a friend came to visit. She asked if we had already heard about the accident in the USA. No, neither I nor my wife had it.
We then turned on the television for a moment and looked at what reports were coming on. When our friend left, I could no longer think about working in the office (I was self-employed and the job just had to wait).
Reports kept coming, well, what was known up to that point. It was inconceivable that planes had been flown into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Of course my children (10 and 9 years old) also watched. But after a while my daughter said she didn't want to see it anymore.
After the fall of the wall there was a feeling: everything will be okay. Of course there were also wars and unrest between 89 and 2001. But it was also the time of disarmament, the end of the Cold War, which had taken place on our doorstep.
New York was on the one hand far away and yet so close. Little by little more information became known. The world and especially the USA were in turmoil. Anthrax attacks followed and there were also fears in Germany that something could happen.
The consequences are well known: the hunt for Bin Laden, the Iraq War, Afghanistan, ISIS or IS, attacks in Madrid, London, Paris, ... The attack on the Christmas market in Berlin can also be linked to this.
Was it naive to believe in a more peaceful future after the collapse of the USSR, the fall of the Wall and the end of the Cold War? Yes, in retrospect it was certainly naive.
But what should we tell our children? What should I, should we, tell our grandchildren? Don't believe in a peaceful world? People are evil, greedy and obsessed with power?
Yes, that is one side, the dark side, that is probably in every person. But there is also the bright, the friendly, the good side. And everyone can and must decide for themselves which side gets the upper hand.
