Starting My 2024 Potato
Potato are a big part of my family's diet, and growing fresh potato on our own is not only healthier for us, but also, saves us a LOT of money on groceries. My goal, with my gardens, is to provide fresh and healthy food for my family and friends. Potato is a big part of trying to be as close to self sufficient as I can.
How DO I Plant My 2024 Potato
Early each spring, I start by prepping my soil, for use in my Potato Grow Bags. I have Five 25 gallon (95 Liter) Fabric Grow Bags. I start by mixing 1/3 soil from last year's grow bags, 1/3 compost, and 1/3 Sphagnum Peat Moss, from Canada. Not picking on UK, but, Canadian Peat Moss is grown and harvested in an extremely sustainable way. The UK has a LONG way to go before they are even remotely close to environmentally sustainable in the Peat harvesting.
To this, I add a handful of Bone Meal, a granular organic fertilizer. This stuff takes about 2 -6 weeks to break down, so I do this a good solid month before I need to plant my SEED Potato.
Are you growing POTATO?? Let me know below, in the comments.
My gardens are in Zone 7a/7b New England.
I used Wood Prairie Farm for my Seed Potato again, this year. Great family farm, not far from me in Maine. I planted Adirondack Blue, and Dark Red Norland, as well as seed potato from my own Yukon Gold Potato, grown last year. The Adirondack Blue has a blue flesh inside, and darker skin. The Red Norland is a classic Red. Yukon Gold is a yellow flesh, and one of the two most popular grown potato in the US (The other is Russet).
