My First Three Tune Tuesday: Not going to bite.

I wasn't really sure where I wanted to go with this post today. I had some things happen yesterday that got some thoughts kicking around my head, but I just wasn't sure I could put them down in a cohesive manner. I'm still not promising anything, so you better buckle in!

This is my first #threetunetuesday post originated by @ablaze.

I'm on a Listserv (yes, they still exist) for education technology professionals. As you can imagine, one of the big topics lately has been ChatGPT. One of the things we have to deal with as education tech professionals is a federal law called CIPA. It's the Children's Internet Protection Act and it is supposed to keep kids safe from the more nasty stuff on the Internet.

The question was brought up about whether or not ChatGPT is CIPA compliant.

One of my colleagues from inside the state responded with this:

"Could just be the latest trend of companies using buzz words to try and draw attention to their products, the same way they were throwing around "blockchain" a few years ago."

I'll be honest, my heart sank. I was getting ready to respond with something (anything), but I stopped myself, nope, not going to bite.

It was then that another one of my colleagues from a different part of the state replied with this:

"I doubt this is another buzzword situation like “blockchain”, with the difference being that ChatGPT is actually a useful product."

By now my blood was on the verge of boiling, but I still refrained from replying. First, I suck at debating, so I doubt I would have been able to hold my own should the conversation turn. Second, what's the point? People are so ingrained in their thinking that 90% of the time you are not going to change their mind. Why even try.

It just makes me sad that others who make tech their life don't see the benefit of blockchain. It's almost like they are purposely trying to rile you up. It's like they are fishing in the dark.

Of course, the song above is about something entirely different than crypto or fishing for that matter, but I still felt like it fit in pretty well. I do love crypto, don't you? This is a pretty classic song. Probably not the best version of it that is out there. It sounds like they had some balance issues with the audio, but you get the idea.

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band are iconic. If you go into an old honky tonk, there is a good chance you will eventually hear this song.

The fact is, just like love, I believe in crypto. I believe it has the power to change our lives. We just need to believe in it. Do you believe in it? Of course you do, you are here right? Like I said, it just baffles me that people don't see the benefit of blockchain. I get it, crypto has gotten a bad rap, but the basic underlying fundamentals are pretty sound.

I doubt any of these guys would argue that two key encryption or distributed ledger is a bad thing, but when you throw out the words crypto and blockchain, they automatically shut down. We are supposed to be the fore-runners. The guys living on the bleeding edge. Not the boomers. I just want to shake them and tell them to wake up!

That's okay though. They can keep making fun of crypto and blockchain and thinking it is never going to amount to anything or it has zero use case. The day will come when I can buy me a boat. Just like this song by Chris Janson.

I actually got to see Chris live in concert at the Grand Ole Opry the last time my wife and I were down in Nashville, TN. You wouldn't know this from the song above, but he is a pretty dang good harmonica player. He was doing some crazy stuff during the four song set we saw him play.

This is a pretty catchy tune and it fits in with the whole fishing theme I started out with, so there you go.

I've got a bonus track for you though, just to throw you a little bit. Referencing my comment above:

"I just want to shake them and tell them to wake up!"

I do love me some System of a Down. This is probably their most popular song and one of my favorites from them. Enjoy!

A great selection of songs and they do fit with your thought son Crypto well, it is such a shame so many in general and in particular in the IT field know so little about the benifits the blockchains can provide

Yeah, it boggles my mind sometimes. I just don't get how they can be so walled off to it given everything we have seen in the past ten to twenty years.

Yay! I do believe in love! .. and now in crypto!
And I just got a reminder that Huey desperately needs more listening time in this house..
Thanks! 😃

No problem! I think everyone needs a little more Huey Lewis and the News in their lives for sure!

Boah, what a debut. Welcome to #ttt, man!

I feel your pain, most people have a stereotypical bad view on blockchain and/or crypto.
But remember the (early) 90's? No way, this internet thing is gonna be useful in daily life one day. Won't catch on. For companies and military use? Maybe but not for us normal folks. And who'd need a computer at home anyway?

You've put a great post together, the songs go good with your text. Felt good to finally let it out somehow, right? 😁

I like "Buy me a boat" the most, the occasional country-rock is very welcome in my speakers.

Rock on and don't bite!

Yeah, it is interesting how we drag our feet on some of the most significant tech advances. I remember my dad used to say that mice were for people who don't know how to use the keyboard. I still tease him about that now. Thanks for the kind words. Music has always been a huge part of my life so writing about it comes very natural to me. If you have never been to the Opry you should totally go sometime. We saw Luke Combs last summer at the shoe in Ohio. Great show!

Probably gonna be a loong time before I visit the states again with the chance of going to a concert. But when I do, I hope I'll remember your tip.

Oh yeah, the keyboard/mouse debate, lucky me my dad was always into the new stuff. But when I discovered linux I was on the "dark side" of it for a while. 😉

Haha, that is funny about Linux. My dad is pretty techy, but he has zero desire to learn about blockchain or any of this. Linux would also be a stretch for him. If you do ever make it to the US, Nashville is a must and do make sure you visit the Opry. Especially if you dig country music as much as you say!

Especially if you dig country music as much as you say!

I like the Country Music that also leans towards rock music.
From the top of my head I'd say Jason Aldean and Toby Keith.

I've done some youtubing for Chris Janson and e.g. "Fix a Drink" fits in that mix perfectly :-)

I saw Aldean a couple of years ago. He isn't one of those showy performers. He just goes on stage, sings his songs, and then he's done. It was still a good show.

Oh, that's sad to hear.
I like a good live show, especially when you can feel the artist enjoying and engaging the audience. After all, that is the reason why we bought the ticket. 😁

But mostly I enjoy small shows, with not that many in the crowd.

There's a German (dark) metal band, "Subway to Sally", I like their music but never go on a concert, just too crowded and the audience too pushy. Their lead singer Eric Fish is also on a tour as guitar player with two friends, covering american folk/country tunes (e.g. turn the page and similar). Went to two of his shows and both were more campfire feeling with only 200 in the audience, no security or fences.

I like small shows like that too. I went and saw nine inch nails a while ago and almost died when I got stuck in a mosh pit. Probably the worst concert experience I have ever had. I'll have to check out that guy.

Great selection Bozz and welcome to #ttt. I do like me some SoD too! I was thinking that Huey Lewis and the News do make quite a few romantic songs and I was a fan after watching Back to the Future. lol

It seems the people convincing themselves there is no usecase for blockchain are really just trying to convince themselves.

Yeah, for sure. It's almost like they are trying to justify their oversight in not getting in when they could have. Huey Lewis is great. I saw him in concert a long time ago. It was a fantastic show. Fore and Sport are iconic albums that are a necessity in any collection. I had them on cassette tape and now I have them both on vinyl.

Huey sure made it hip to be square! Did you see the video he made with making fun of the American Psycho film?

No, that doesn't sound familiar. I will have to see if I can find it.

To be fair, I've never seen the movie, but I will check it out!

It is the movie that catapulted Christan Bale AFAIK.

Nice one @bozz, great to have you here on #threetunetuesday and I must say I really like your concept this week, bringing us our tunes, but also bringing us an opinion piece and integrating the two, really cool. The story about CIPA compliance and the conversation that started up around blockchain being a buzzword is interesting. We all know the use cases here on Hive, but that is because we are all mostly proficient in blockchain, decentralisation and tokenomics, but not everyone is and many will base their opinion on something a friend or acquaintance told them. Many regular Joes got burnt when Bitcoin hit all time highs, they bought some and lost at least half, then sold at a loss and forever more will berate blockchain to anyone who will listen. The mass adoption will in my opinion come from the younger generation who were born into technology and will quickly see the benefits, it will take years to get there though, but the beauty for those like you and I is that we can continue to accumulate and ride out any ups and downs and end up with a nice nestegg.

Nice job on the tunes, Buy me a Boat and Chop Suey my favourites, nice one.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I agree with you to a point. I think my biggest issue is these are tech people. Many of them lived through the creation and growth of the Internet like myself. It just seems like they would know better than to totally discount Blockchain whether they got burned or not. I do love my music, so this was a bit natural for me. I already have a plan in mind for next week!

Next week..... Excellent (In my best Mr. Burns voice)

Ya I have friends and colleagues who are very skeptical about blockchain too and I guess unless you use it and get a feel for it, it is easy to discount it as a fad. I'm just glad that I discovered it in 2018 and have done OK so far and have plans to keep on growing before more people become wide to the opportunities.

Looking forward to seeing where you bring us next week on three tune tuesday tour.

Yeah, I am glad I got in at the end of 2017. I wish I had made some better moves a year or two ago, but I will try to do better next time. It's easy to forget we are still really early.

Ah ya, same here. Hindsight is 20/20 and all of that, but when the arse is falling out of the market, it is hard to be brave but as the saying goes, "buy when there's blood in the streets" - some rich bollix said that once and he was right! 🤣

Hello from another Ed Tech professional who is constantly amazed at the things that my colleagues don't recognize as a part of an ecosystem that they have to prepare students to succeed in.

I am SO glad you took part in TTT - it's one of my favorite parts of every week. I haven't heard Nitty Gritty Dirt Band since I was a teen - this is the music of my soul. So nice to meet you. Stay in the fight!

Great to meet you too! Yeah for me fifties and sixties music is probably my soul music. It is what I grew up listening to, but I love pretty much everything! I understand how us people can be set in our ways, but this just feels like ignorant stubbornness on their part.
