An off-duty police officer has been charged with impaired driving after crashing his vehicle on the Trans-Canada Highway over the weekend, the RCMP says.
In a news release, the RCMP said officers arrived on the scene of a single-vehicle crash on the highway near Glovertown around 10:45 a.m. NT on Sunday.
The driver, 34-year-old off-duty RCMP officer Travis Plant, took a roadside breath test, which police say he failed.
"He was arrested for impaired operation and was transported to the detachment where he provided breath samples that were more than one and a half times the legal limit," the news release reads.
Plant's driver's licence was suspended and his vehicle has been seized and impounded.
The RCMP said Plant's current duty status remains under review and SIRT-NL — the province's police watchdog — has been notified.
None of the charges have been proven in court.
