This battle analysis takes a very interesting ruleset (magic only) and pits two very different strategies against each other.

Ruleset:

  • Magic only
  • No armor
  • Mana cap: 40

Analysis:

Given the relatively high mana available in the ruleset and the fact that it's magic only, I was faced with a decision: either go defensive (with Immortalis) or go on the offensive (with someone like Obsidian or with Kitty). I considered Obsidian to increase my damage output, but then figured that if I was faced against Immortalis the increased damage output wouldn't mean much given the void on all monsters. Therefore I went for the alternate offensive strategy: Kitty.

My opponent did in fact use Immortalis, and put the Mycelic Slipspawn up front to direct all damage, with a Goblin Psychic in the back helping keep it alive. On my end I went for a Void Dragon tank, hoping to evade as much of the magic hits as possible.

During the battle, Immortalis's void made it extremely difficult to kill the Slipspawn, but Doctor Blight's poison and the Suidae Shaman's big hits every other turn ultimately did the job.

The battle is thoroughly entertaining, and after thinking about it more I realized every one of my monsters played a role in the win:

  • Void Dragon tanked hits thanks to Void and evaded hits thanks to his speed and phase
  • Suidae Shaman's big hits and recharge were able to punch some damage through despite the Void on the other side
  • Doctor Blight applied Affliction to prevent heals, and poison which is unaffected by Void
  • Spirit Hoarded gave opponents Blind, which increased the Void Dragon's chances of dodging hits
  • Oshuur provided heals and a well needed revive
  • Goblin Psychic provided heals, helped Doctor Blight to land Affliction, and reduced the enemy's damage thanks to Silence

In summary, it was a terrific team win. Although Void Dragon looks like the MVP, each monster really played a key role in facilitating the victory.

Hope you enjoyed!
