My Kettle Has A Leek!...Garden Updates #3.

in #hive-1406352 years ago

Hello to my fellow worker bees!

I come to you just over a week later from my last update and a lot has been changing in the garden! Summer has reached us here in the North-East of England, the sun has been shining down on my little backyard plot and with it has come an exciting flurry of growth!

In today's post I am going to show you all some of that growth as well as a small guest appearance from the wonderful Mrs. Gryllis, as we store our harvest to munch down when we need it. I hope you enjoy it!

Left: One of my Mint planters as the new shoots started to emerge just 2 weeks ago. This bed originated from a small herb pot that was purchased from my local supermarket.
Right: The same planter taken yesterday after a couple of weeks soaking up the rays. I cut this down to about an inch high every winter to help the plant retain nutrients in it's roots. This helps it to bounce back quickly the next year!

The Purple Sprouting Broccoli featured in my first post decided that it's work was done after we took our second harvest and flowered heavily. I had two good years out of this plant and decided that it was taking up way to much space and therefore, had to go. I let it flower for the past week so that the local bees and other pollinators could take advantage before cutting it done and putting it on the compost pile.

Broad Beans, from seed to transplanting. I used toilet roll tubes and an old mushroom container to grow them on from seed. The rolls make for a really easy time when transplanting them in to my garden bed! I watered them and gave them a mulch with some of my homemade compost to help the soil retain moisture.

After a long wait my dalek bin has finally provided it's first batch of compost. I managed to get it to about 2/3 full before I started using it. The plan is to use whatever is left after the season to help mulch my raised beds for the winter and restore some valuable nutrients after a hard year of growing. I started a second container while this batch settles.

We also took our 2nd major harvest of this year, it was time to pull up the Leeks. I dug them up yesterday and gave them to my lovely wife so she could wash them and chop them up ready to be frozen. As you can see from the 3rd picture, she was happy to help! 😂

I made it up to her though...by fixing our LEEKY kettle! 😂😂😂
(APOLOGIES)

Even our small collection of house plants have benefitted from the heatwave, my step daughter's cactus has crowned itself with a crazy pink halo of flowers!

Ahaha, yeah I'm a lucky man! I can be very mischievous though, so the knife helps! 😆 Have an awesome weekend! 🤟

Great progress! Six weeks back we moved house and have a new build garden. It’s smaller than our old house but it’s practical! We’ve just restarted our veg-pod. So far tomatoes mainly, no leeks… yet.

Thanks man, it's been a slow start for me this year due to the weather and my lack of a greenhouse but I'm getting there! Nothing wrong with tomatoes, I'm attempting them for the first time this year. Any tips?

That fresh mint must smell so good. I've never had leeks before. Do you use them in soups?

Yeah, I've got standard mint, peppermint and spearmint on tap! Potato & Leek soup is one of our favourites. We also sautee it in butter too which is amazing!

That's looking great!
