One of the worst things that can happen to any individual is to live in a compound where you have terrible neighbors. Honestly, if you have good neighbors that you can vibe with and enjoy their company, you really have no idea what you’re enjoying. In a compound where there is no unity among the neighbors, where everyone only focuses on thinking for themselves, and where they all act as if they’re better than others, it’s only a ticking bomb waiting to take everyone down with it.
If everyone is feeling big and on top of the world, they feel like they’re better than their neighbors and therefore, can’t even be bothered to care about the things that they do or say. Neighbors only come out of their houses when they want to go out and refuse to attend meetings or make contributions when one facility or the other is spoilt in the compound. Such neighbors are definitely going to lead to the downfall of everyone in the compound.
This is what is currently happening to a compound close to where I live. It’s that kind of compound where everyone is a big man or a big woman, they’re always trying to compete with each other. They’re snobs and for some reason, they seem to be allergic to working together. If one neighbor is playing his music too loud, instead of others telling him to quiet down, they will simply play theirs and make it louder. So, the place is always noisy and rowdy. It’s always dirty as well because these people cannot bring themselves together to perform sanitation, I can count how many times the compound has been fined by the community council due to how dirty the compound was.
And yet, these are people who are claiming to be big men and women ooo! It just doesn’t make any sense, yet everyone else sees it except them. Yet, they would rather be punished and suffer together than enjoy working with each other. It’s just insane.
For the past six months now, all of them have been going out of the compound to fetch water, something that’s almost unheard of in this my area because every compound has a good water system. Every compound has working pumping machine and a generator in case the power is unreliable. So, no matter what, there should always be water in the house. All the people have to do is contribute to fuel the generator.
At first, they were doing that, but it all went to dust because they no longer trusted whoever was holding the money for fuel. Many of them were also refusing to pay, they kept delaying and kept saying that power would be restored and there was no need for buying of fuel. Sometimes, individuals will fuel the generator simply to pump water to their specific abodes.
Not long after, they started having this same issue with electricity bills. Coming together to pay the bills felt like war and in the end, they simply stopped paying it altogether. Power holders came and disconnected their line, plunging them into darkness. They’ve never been able to reconnect it, because those with generator don’t even care, and some feel that as long as they can charge their phones elsewhere they’re good to go.
With electricity gone, they were forced to rely on the generator to pump their water, but with their feud brewing between them, that was so difficult to come about and the frequency was epileptic. However, it only got worse when the generator developed fault. That was like the final full-stop to everything. It was as if they simply packed the generator up and locked it. So now, they have a working pumping machine, a good generator that only needs a little fixing, and water in the ground. Yet, they’re going outside to fetch. And I’m sure that even if you told all of them to contribute N100 to fix the generator, many of them would still complain bitterly and refuse to do it.
It’s crazy. When I heard this story, I couldn’t believe that things like this happen, especially among young people. Where I live, such a thing can never happen. Many times sef when the generator or pumping machine spoils, one person can offer to fix it, without even involving the entire compound. You can’t be disturbing the entire lodge with your music and expect me to be cool with it. If I tell you to reduce your volume and you refuse, I’ll just disconnect you from the light. Life is not hard, really.
I’m just wondering how I would have coped in such a compound. I’m a writer and I need quiet and tranquility. How will I do it when I have to worry about dirt, noise, and water? Honestly, some people really need to do better, because these things don’t go well at all. We think we’re doing others, but in reality, we’re only doing ourselves. We have to learn.
