Today marks the start of a new week and if there is anything I’ve learned from this past week, it’s the fact that no one knows what the future holds at all. Anything can happen at any given time and it is up to you to be prepared for such an eventuality. Whether good or bad, the tide can turn at any moment, life can turn on its head and if you’re without a plan, you’ll be like a fish on land, floundering about as it gasps for air.
But then, knowing life, you can’t just be ready for everything that can happen. It’s impossible. No matter all the contingencies you prepare for, something will still happen that will kick everything out of order. One that would catch you off-guard and you won’t be prepared for in any way. However, that won’t be an excuse, because whether you planned for it or not, you’d definitely have to deal with it.
Nobody prays for bad things to happen to us, yet we prepare for them. We prepare for the unwanted eventuality that they do happen so that when such a time comes, we will be prepared. Because this is life, and whether we want it to or not, bad things will definitely happen. Unfailingly. We just have to make sure that we don’t get swept away by the tides when it comes.
However, the funny thing about this is that it doesn’t just work for bad things. It works just the same when good things happen to us. It’s also something that we need to be prepared for because if we don’t utilize it very well, it’s only a matter of time before we lose it all. When opportunities come, if they don’t meet us ready, we’d find ourselves subconsciously sabotaging ourselves until everything goes to crap.
There are stories of people who have been blessed with great opportunities, they got the miraculous “destiny helper” stories that many people pray for. The situation where someone from nowhere could just come and credit you with millions or give you such a momentous present that if handled correctly, could make your life better by a long shot.
On social media, especially in the Nigerian space, there are so many people like that. There are those who were able to capitalize on such opportunities and make a name for themselves, effectively changing their lives forever. And then, there were those who bungled such opportunities. They came with no plan, nothing, and squandered all the good things they got, until they were back to square one.
There is no need for me to mention names, I’m sure that there are some that you can think of, right off the bat. It’s just what it is. It’s only sad that many such people don’t get the danger of their actions until it’s way too late. And even then, they still don’t take responsibility for their actions. They blame everyone else, claim that they were only being used, yada yada yada…
Well, it is what it is. While you’re working hard and praying for opportunities, someone out there is getting it and making good use of it. But then, there are also people out there who are getting the same opportunities and messing it up. In the same way, while you’re praying against bad luck and trouble, some people are getting it and standing up to the responsibilities while others are simply being swept away by the current.
Where do you fall in? The answer you give could determine how you would react to both situations.
