I’ve always wondered what the world would be like if reincarnation were really possible. And not just any reincarnation, but the kind where you get to remember all your past lives. I’m not talking about deja vu and all that, I mean you’ll know everyone you ever came into contact with in your past life, you remember all the decisions and mistakes that you made and as such use them to craft your new life.
That would be a great thing, don’t you think? At least if your first life was as a poor man, by the time you’re reborn you’re supposed to have a better grasp on how money is made and know the things that should be done to make it happen. If that doesn’t still work, you can try again in your next life.
At least if you’re a doctor in your previous life, you’ll still know everything about being a doctor in your next life. That way, you’ll still be able to help people out when they have ailments and such. Remembering our past lives would be really great and would save many of us from making some really dumb decisions that would come to haunt us for the rest of our lives.
But then, would it really be such a great idea? Because the more I think about it, the more it looks like it might not really favor the person who has come back to life. Imagine a person who has been reincarnated twenty times and remembers all twenty of them clearly. This means that they’ve been born to twenty families where they had siblings, they were born into twenty of such neighborhoods where they most likely had friends and best friends. And then, depending on how long they lived, they could also have twenty spouses or more that they’ve been legally bound to. What about children? Dozens of them had over the years.
Remembering all these things will be nothing but torture for the person, especially if people from their past lives are still alive. How would you begin to explain to a man that you’re his father who died fifty years ago but you’ve reincarnated? He’d think you’re crazy and probably call the cops on you. But then, you can’t just turn your backs on them because they’re still your family… in some sense at least.
However, that is not even the worst bit. The worst part about all this will be the comparison that you’ll always be fated to do. People don’t compare much when they have a better option than their past, but when the ones they had in the past is better, there will always be comparisons. If you’re remembering parents, siblings or lovers from your past lives, you’ll always compare them to those in your present life. And many times, these can bleed into the relationship and create a wedge.
It could make you come into the world expecting some sort of treatment and when you don’t get it, things just might get sour for you. This kind of behavior won’t be fair at all, the parents, siblings, and lovers will be competing with ghosts from your pasts without even knowing it. And it won’t be fair to you either because try as you might, you may never be treated the way those people treated you in your past life. That’s the simple fact.
So, my dear friends, I guess it’s a good thing we don’t remember our past lives. There are people who still don’t think reincarnation is real, and there are those who believe it with everything they have. And there is me who is still sitting on the fence and sharing my thoughts on it anyway. Whatever way the cookie crumbles, I’m game. So, whether it’s real or not, remembering our past lives would be a big time hassle indeed.
