So, making the ultimate sacrifice so that the world would be a better place. This feels like the theme of a superhero movie where the hero would end up giving his life so that everyone else gets to live. When you think of it, it does have a poetic ring to it and makes one think of nobility and whatnot. Giving your life for the world would be a great thing indeed, especially if the world knows that you did it for them.
You would be remembered fondly and whatever sins you committed in the past will be easily forgotten, no matter how bad. It doesn’t matter what you did or how many people you killed, if you sacrificed your life so that the rest of the world may live, then you’re forgiven and you’re automatically a saint. That’s just so sweet.
So, is this something I would try if I had the chance? Nah… leave the heroics for Superman and Batman. There are times I can choose to be a hero, even if it comes to having to lay down my life. I can do it to save my family, especially if I’m sure that my actions will save them, I will do it. I can make sacrifices for my brother, sister, and even parents. And of course, I would be able to make the sacrifice for my kids, without a second thought. These are people that nature has blessed me with and I know that no matter what, they will never forget what I did for them.
But then, when it comes to the world at large, it’s a different ball game entirely. You see, people will be people and as long as we still have that pesky thing called free will, there will always be a problem. You could give your life today so that peace would reign, you could make the sacrifice to end world hunger and poverty. This prosperous time might last only for a few months or at most, a year. However, eventually, people will start wanting more than they can have. People will resume looking at their neighbors and wanting everything they have. Not because they need it, but because they simply want to have it.
No amount of sacrifices will take greed away from humans, no matter how much they have, they will always want some more. That is the reason the world is plagued by hunger, starvation, and war, people want more than they need and more than they should have. If everyone was content with theirs then there would be no need to fight, would there?
So, for this reason, giving my life for the world would be a bad idea because, in the long run, it will seem like such a waste of sacrifice. If the world is bad, then we can work together to make it a better one. We can fix the world easily, but everyone is more concerned with reaping their benefits. No one cares about the big picture and that’s why we’re where we are today.
Well, these are my thoughts on the matter, for now. Things may happen and I may change my mind over time. I could decide to get a bit more sacrificial-ish… but I guess time will tell. I sure hope that time doesn’t come sha. Let me not save the world finish and have no one remember what I did. It would be painful.
