One thing that has always confused me is the concept of the Original Sin. According to the catholic teachings, everyone is born a sinner. We’re all inheritors of the sin of disobedience, the act that was perpetuated by Adam and Eve way back when the world was created. As a result, even newborn babies are not left out. As long as they’ve been born into the world, they’re sinners.
And this is what makes baptism so important. Baptism washes away the original sin and makes the individual clean in Christ. This way, they would be ready to begin their personal spiritual journey without being bogged down by the sins of our biblical ancestors.
Anyway, that’s all part of what I need to talk about today. Is it fair that we have to bear the consequences of the terrible decisions that our parents made? Many of us weren’t even alive when they made them, many of such decisions were made without them thinking of us, but then, why do we get to suffer for it?
This reminds me of one of the trends that has been popularized on the internet today. In the past, becoming a pornstar was just like becoming an actual movie star. You had to be scouted and trained. However, today it’s a whole different ballgame. With a phone and a ringlight, anyone at all can become a pornstar. They spend their prime doing all forms of dirty things and once they hit their thirties, they suddenly “find themselves” and “re-discover religion”.
Sadly though, by then it’s too late. The videos will always be online and will never be taken down. It may never affect them, they lived the life and they probably own up to it. However, when they eventually have kids, it’ll only be a matter of time before the friends of the kid stumble on the X-rated videos of the parents online. That’s enough to kickstart bullying that could go on to traumatize the poor child for life. There are numerous kids out there who have fallen into depression or taken extreme measures due to such acts by their parents.
Now, is it fair that they have to suffer this? After all, they’re not the pornstars and their parents only did it before they were born. But sadly, life doesn’t work in a straight pattern. Life doesn’t follow any form of logic. They didn’t ask to be born to such parents, it’s what life gave to them and they have to simply deal with it.
We don’t have a say in where life places us. People are born to parents who are chronic debtors, cheats, violent and extremely abusive parents, this comes with a whole lot of issues that scar the kids for life. However, some of them go on to have a good life while others simply never make it, or just continue the vicious cycle. And then, we have those who are born to parents who are billionaires, celebrities, and pastors. These also come with their perks, and they bring out the best individual just as they can bring out the worst.
It’s not fair that people have to suffer for things they had no hand in doing, but then, it is what it is. And it’s just one cruel twist of fate, just as how children can also enjoy the benefits of having great parents. The kind of parents you have can make your social life easy or extremely hard. If your parents are the kind of people who are sociable and nice to everyone, they can build meaningful networks for you. However, if your parents are rude people who pick fights with everyone, you will be avoided like a pariah, no matter how sociable you are.
It’s just the way of the world, there’s nothing we can do about it. We can only hope that when it comes, we’re able to handle it and not let it bog us down. After all, the prayer is that we’re not hit by something that we can’t handle.
