Hi friends from Life Style! Today I was collecting the photos I took of my return to the lab, it turns out that at the Institute of Experimental Biology, my workplace where I do research, they are doing remodeling work and it is quite complex, they are demolishing entire laboratories to rebuild them again. This work started at the end of last year and it is the reason why I had not been there for almost 2 months.

Hoy estuve recolectando las fotos que tomé de mi regreso al laboratorio, resulta que en el Instituto de Biología Experimental, mi lugar de trabajo donde hago investigación están haciendo trabajos de remodelación y son bastante complejos están demoliendo laboratorios enteros para reconstruirlos nuevamente. Estos trabajos empezaron a finales del año pasado y es la razón por la que no había ido estos casi 2 meses.

I had already made a post talking about the more than 60 years that the Institute has had, so I just want to share with you the state of some spaces in the Institute that have already been restored. In this work, truly ancient objects have been found, such as these wall clocks with pendulums. These are some of the things that have been left as exhibits, but there are some really impressive things, such as refrigerators and centrifuges from the 1960s, just when we were taking off as a scientific power, given the path that the illustrious Venezuelan Humberto Fernández Morán had already paved for us.
Ya había hecho un post hablando de los más de 60 años que tiene el Instituto asi que solo quiero compartirte el estado de algunos espacios del Instituto que ya han sido restaurados, en esa labor se han encontrado objetos verdaderamente altiguos como estos relojes de pared con péndulo, son algunas de las cosas que se han dejado como exhibición pero hay cosas realmente impresionantes, como neveras y centrifugas de los años 60 justo cuando despegábamos como una potencia científica dado el camino que ya nos había dejado el ilustrisimo venezolano Humberto Fernández Morán.

The only thing that didn't have light was my tutor's office. It's really impossible to be there, not so much because there's no light, but rather the light of the morning and midday sun that generates an unbearable heat without air conditioning, so we have to wait for the light to be reinstalled in the hallway where our offices are.
Pero volviendo con el propósito de mi regreso al instituto, mi tutora muy emocionada me informó que ya el laboratorio había sido iluminado nuevamente y la verdad que tenía razón ya se ve mejor el laboratorio. Lo único que no tenía luz era la oficina de mi tutora, realmente es imposible estar alli, no tanto porque no haya luz, al contrario la luz del sol de la mañana y mediodía que genera un calor insoportable sin aire acondicionado así que nos toca esperar a que reinstalen la luz en el pasillo donde están nuestras oficinas.
The first thing I did was help my tutor bring some of her stuff into our makeshift office in the lab and you can see I really enjoyed seeing the stuff I kept from when I was a grad student long ago, some things could actually be considered vintage!
Lo primero que hice fue ayudar a mi tutora a traer algunas de sus cosas a nuestra oficina improvisada en el laboratorio y verán disfrute mucho ver las cosas que guardaba de cuando era estudiante de postgrado hace mucho tiempo ya, algunas cosas podrían considerarse propiamente vintage!
It's been a long time since I've seen 3 1/2 floppy disks, in fact the student I was with had no idea what the heck they were🤣. The painting was a painting my tutor did when she was a student and her main hobby was painting. I hope she gets back into it, she just needs to delegate her current responsibilities to me, which is why I'm back.
Hacía mucho tiempo que no veía disketes 3 1/2 de hecho el estudiante que me acompañaba no tenía idea de que diablos era eso 🤣. El cuadro fue una pintura que hizo mi tutora cuando era estudiante y su principal hobby era pintar. Espero que vuelva a retomarlo, solo necesita delegar sus actuales responsabilidades sobre mi por eso estoy de regreso.
Previously my tutor taught classes with slides, there was no video beam available back then and even less computers so this was the way cell biology was taught in the early 90's. The photo is of the Simon Bolivar Urban Complex also known as Parque Central. I have all these things safely stored in the laboratory. They are fragments of memories from my tutor and she treasures them very much. For me, it is like a vintage exhibition, fragments of time frozen in objects and photographs.
Anteriormente mi tutora daba clases con diapositivas, no había disponibilidad de videobeam en aquellos tiempos y menos de computadoras así que esta era la forma en la que se dictaba la biología celular a principios de los años 90. La fotografía es del Complejo urbanístico Simón Bolívar conocido también como Parque Central. Tengo todas estas cosas a buen resguardo en el laboratorio son fragmentos de recuerdos de mi tutora y los atesora mucho, para mi es como una exposición vintage, fragmentos del tiempo congelado en objetos y fotografías.
Later, I did dedicate myself to laboratory tasks and one of them was this terrible oversight, not having activated the desiccator! Fortunately, the reagents with the potential to hydrate, such as trichloro acetic acid and ammonium persulfate, had been sealed almost hermetically.
Posteriormente si me dedique a labores propias de laboratorio y una de ellas era este terrible descuido, no haber activado el desecador! Afortunadamente los reactivos con potencial para hidratarse como el ácido tricloro acético y el persulfato de amonio los había sellado casi herméticamente.
So the question was, how to activate the desiccator? In order for this glass bell to maintain a dry environment, these silica gel beads are used that absorb the humidity present in the bell, keeping the environment dry. When they are hydrated, these beads become transparent, but after placing them in an oven at 70 °C and activating an air extractor, we have the blue beads completely dehydrated.
Entonces la pregunta era, ¿Cómo activar el desecador? para que esa campana de vidrio mantenga un ambiente seco se usa estas perlas de gel de sílice que absorben la humedad presente en la campana manteniendo el ambiente seco. Cuando están hidratadas estas perlas se vuelven transparentes, pero luego de ponerlas en una estufa a 70 °C y activando un extractor de aire tenemos las perlas azules completamente deshidratadas.
So, we place these beads inside the bell jar, place the base and on top of it we place the reagents that we want to keep dry and we must make sure that the lid seals this space hermetically.
Así, colocamos estas perlas dentro de la campana, colocamos la base y sobre éste se ubican los reactivos que queremos mantener secos y debemos asegurarnos que la tapa selle este espacio de forma hermética.
Ready! We have a desiccator like new and we have put things in order in the laboratory, this is just the beginning because although my boss has already finished tidying up her office, I still need to tidy up mine and the main problem, the most immediate one, is that the lock was forced and it no longer opens so I will have to break it and install a new one and then start to organize that vortex of entropy that is my office.

Tenemos desecador como nuevo y hemos puesto en orden las cosas del laboratorio, esto es apenas el comienzo porque si bien ya mi jefa terminó de ordenar su oficina todavía falta ordenar la mía y principal problema, el más inmediato, es que la cerradura fue forzada y ya no abre por lo que tendré que romperla e instalar una nueva y luego empezar a organizar ese vórtice de entropía que es mi oficina.
