At a point in my life, I thought everyone, or at least most people would have the same mindset as me, whenever I owe someone money, either a friend or stranger, I won't have rest of mind until I pay the debt... The last thing I want is to disappoint someone who helped me and stop them from helping others because of my actions.
Unfortunately, many people do not have the same mindset, they don't care about the consequences of their actions, I am that guy who is a good listener and even when I am down, If you bring your sad stories, I will give you a listening ear if that would comfort you or probably go out of my way to find a solution to your problem... I also got healed knowing my presence or actions help to relieve someone of their pains, heavy heart, or whatever they are going through.
I don't make friends easily but I cherish my old friends and never want anything to put a stop to our friendship, I have a friend who is more like a younger brother, there was a time that he started moving with some group of boys and I warned him that it won't help him, too many friends especially those driving on the wrong path will only hinder one's progress and those are the kind of friends he is with now... Whenever he made money, he would disappear and I wouldn't see him again until something bad happened to him, he would come back like a prodigal son and I would accept him to my home, he would share his problems and I would advise him but that does not stop him from committing the same mistake again when another money appears.
I break a lot of my rules for him, for example, If someone borrows money from me and does not return it, I would not lend them money again if they need my help again but countless times, my bro has borrowed money from me and end up not paying back, even when he has money, he will tell me but he never mentioned about my money nor did I ask him too, which is because I adore him.
Recently he borrowed money from me which he promised to return two weeks later, but two weeks passed 1 month and he didn't return it...Fortunately, he and his younger brother used to keep money with me, especially their house rent, so his brother messaged me that he wanted to send money to my account and when I checked the transactions I realized it was the elder bro who owed me money that owns the money so I messaged him that I have taken my money from the money he sent and he said ok no problem...
My thought was he already normalized not paying back the money he owed me because I do not ask back... In the end, not everyone will be like you but that should not stop you from associating or loving them, you just have to know your limit.
