Hi hivers - Hola hivers

How is my dear Hive community? I hope that very well, one of the last days that I was walking around Argentina after preparing everything for the trip, I dedicated myself to walking through the streets of the city and seeing many emblematic places before returning to Uruguay.

The streets of Buenos Aires have a mix of different architectural styles, from neoclassical, art deco, colonial, but wherever you look there are buildings that dazzle your eyes with such beauty.

Specifically, today I want to talk to you about the Metropolitan Cathedral of Buenos Aires, with a marked neoclassical architectural style on its façade and exteriors, typical of the 18th century in which the cathedral began to be built, however it was not two centuries later that it was completed. the project, taking so many years, was multiple architects who worked on the cathedral but in my opinion the romantic style predominates inside, which makes a contradictory but beautiful combination.

The facade was designed in 1822 by the French Próspero Catelin and Pedro Benoit, its inspiration came from the French Bourbon palace and although it looks more like a Greek temple than a cathedral, it is thanks to its symmetry and sublimity typical of the neoclassical style that calls so much the Attention, you can also see many references to religion, such as the 12 pillars on the façade, which represent the 12 apostles who accompanied and then preached the word of Christ.

Just by taking a step inside the place you are already amazed with the amount of artistic details that it has, and that is that the floor is decorated with thousands of mosaics that adorn the cathedral with beautiful flowers in pastel colors since 1907 by the work of the Italian architect Carlos Mora.

On the other hand, the ceilings that in some points reach up to 41 meters high are a marvel of artistic paintings, totally symmetrical segments in accordance with columns that go down to the floor and divide the different chambers of the place, it is impressive in itself a work of art. , everywhere we see sculptures, stone carvings, paintings and more.

Another point of interest is that the remains of General San Martin have been housed inside the cathedral since 1880, it would be the fourth box on the right side where we find his mausoleum, guarded by two grenadiers at the entrance, who when changing guards become in 7, in honor of 7 grenadiers of the 76 who returned from the independence crusade in 1826 and who 54 years later received the remains of General San Martin, the only grenadiers alive after those years, went to receive him and escorted him and They nursed until dawn.

Luckily I visited the cathedral in the afternoon, and I was able to see the end of his guard at 5 pm where they return to the pink house.

This impressive mausoleum was the work of the French sculptor Carrier Belleuse who, typical of his time in Europe, built it with a current of eclecticism taking inspiration from many other artistic and architectural currents.

This cathedral is the main Catholic center of the country, we can find it in front of the Plaza de Mayo and a few blocks from the Casa Rosada, specifically in the neighborhood of San Nicolás in the city of Buenos Aires, it can be visited Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. the morning to 7 pm or Saturdays and Sundays from 9 am to 7.30 pm.

Despite not being a person who practices religion, I recommend going to visit this cathedral, from the architectural or artistic point of view it is a delight for the eyes and it is very enjoyable, I did not have the pleasure of receiving a guided tour, but I do know that they provide them even with auditory support for the different languages.

Hi @carlagonz what a great post about the metropolitan cathedral of Buenos Aires. We are two Venezuelans sharing places and photos of this beautiful city ☺️ It is striking the architecture of Baires inspired in France and other parts of Europe the buildings constructed have a lot of architectural value and thanks to this my interest in knowing a little about it was awakened. In the place where you were there is a lot of impressive history and a lot of buildings to admire. What do you think about the neogothic cathedrals in the city? I imagine you must love them 😍 Greetings paisana hehe

Hello friend, I was just walking around Buenos Aires and I did not visit other cathedrals, however I want to visit them on a future trip, that area is very beautiful, the pink house, the Plaza de Mayo, the cathedral

Thanks!!

An impeccable design, beautiful cathedral, it is more imposing on the inside than on the outside, very nice your pictures.

The two styles are very different, sober and symmetrical on the outside, inside it is a combination of many styles, it is very beautiful!

I love the columns. This is the first time that i have seen a cathedral that has more than four columns from the outside.

I also like it a lot because it looks like a Greek construction
