Montreal market Friday

in #hive-1963082 years ago

Hey Friends! Guess what? It's still Friday in Canada. What does that mean? It means I can actually do a Market Friday post thanks to @dswigle.

I'm pretty sure I haven't done a Market Friday for 3 or more years. The last one was probably in Bangkok. I'm not sure.

DSC_4093.jpg

Now that Marc and I are unemployed, due to our workplace closing forever, we are able to see what goes on in our city of Montreal on Fridays. Being cooks in a restaurant means Fridays are usually spent running in a kitchen.

Last Friday was the day before New years eve and our first Friday off in almost 3 years. We stayed in, and hid from the world.

Today Marc's mouse, for his lap top, broke. He had to get a new one. I was not going to waste a shopping excursion on a mouse. I told him that if I went with him to the computer store, he had to come with me to Chinatown. Deal!

DSC_4097.jpg

The computer store, is in the biggest shopping district, in the middle of town. This is where the trendiest, hippest, and financially capable folks go to get whatever they need. We are seldom in these parts. I usually get my clothes at the thrift shop except for on occasion. I enjoy window shopping even though I'm not interested in most things.

DSC_4098.jpg

It was not too cold today so the streets were full of people. Perhaps it's always like this on Fridays. We don't know.

I was surprised and somewhat impressed with a person who parked a bike on the sidewalk. With all the snow and wet streets, you have to be quite brave to hop on a bike.

DSC_4101.jpg

This pooch waited patiently for their person to get out of the store. Why only boots on the back feet?

DSC_4102.jpg

When we got to the computer store I got instantly bored. I had to get into meditation mode to tolerate it.

DSC_4107.jpg

There were so many mice to choose from. They all ranged in prices. I talked him into a less expensive one, since the expensive ones keep breaking. He finally made his decision.

DSC_4109.jpg

Now it was my turn. I told him we would take a route through the mall to avoid the snow.

DSC_4112.jpg

In the mall, there is a kitchen store. It has kitchen appliances, gadgets, dishes and much more. I saw an air fryer and thought about how I almost bought one, before we knew we would lose our jobs.

DSC_4118.jpg

I usually look in this store but don't buy. In fact I don't think I've ever made a purchase here. It's fun to look.

DSC_4127.jpg

After walking to the end of the mall, there are underground passages that take you to other buildings then to an exit that leads to Chinatown.

DSC_4128.jpg

First stop is a store that I have browsed a few times for fun. Nobody tries to sell you anything. In fact the cashier just spends her time on the cell phone. Usually I don't like that, but this time, I'm relieved.

This is another store, where I have never purchased anything. Usually I want to get a special plate or bowl, then realize I don't want to carry it.

DSC_4130.jpg

The items here are not overly expensive if you're into that stuff.

DSC_4132.jpg

They surprised me with a giant bamboo steamer. I have never in my life seen a bamboo steamer this big before. I could only wonder who would buy this and what kind of heating element they would have, to heat it up.

DSC_4139.jpg

Okay, time to move on to the destination where I would actually make a purchase. The Asian grocery store.

This is a fairly large store with good variety. It's in a basement. The only thing is that the customer service is intimidating. They are not the friendliest or helpful staff. I'm almost scared of them. You can forget about a smile, a "thank you" or "have a nice day".

DSC_4186.jpg

There's a good selection of greens, which most of the time, I can't identify. I almost need an informed Asian greens person to accompany me and be my guide.

DSC_4142.jpg

I know that some Hivers have ginger in their gardens. I've never seen a ginger plant in my life. I harvest my ginger on the shelf of a grocery store, specially wrapped in plastic.

DSC_4143.jpg

The spice isle is full of dried chilies. It's like heaven.

DSC_4153.jpg

I don't have space in my apartment for so many chilies but if I did....oh boy!

DSC_4156.jpg

I usually don't bother with the frozen isle. I only consume plant based and usually this isle doesn't meet my requirements.

DSC_4157.jpg

There are tofu products that I have never tried before. Usually I prefer organic tofu. I make the odd exception though.

DSC_4159.jpg

Then there is the fresh wonton and dumpling wrappers. I used to buy them quite often. Now I try to make my own when I have time. It's more satisfying.

DSC_4161.jpg

I always see these rice sticks and never buy them. I decided to try them out. I don't really know what to do with them. I suppose you cook them and put stuff on them.

Any recipe ideas? Help!!!

DSC_4166.jpg

Marc and i saw a package of seaweed that we use to buy in the past. No we didn't use it for ourselves.

We got it for our cat. She would go crazy for any type of seaweed. She would rather eat seaweed then meat or seafood. She loved spinach as well.

I suppose I should try it someday in a soup or something, but when I saw this, I saw cat food.

DSC_4169.jpg

When I set out for this Asian grocer, I had intended on getting rice wine vinegar. I like to keep it on hand.

I had to search among so many items. There are hundreds of sauces and condiments I have no idea, what to do with. Most are not suitable for me and have either fish or animal products in them. Many have MSG which I try to avoid.

DSC_4185.jpg

I was unsuccessful at avoiding the MSG, when I purchased a bottle of black soy sauce. I didn't read the label this time, until I got home. I wanted to see what it was like. Oh well. I'll use it sparingly.

DSC_4177.jpg

Marc found something we've never seen before, which was five spiced bean curd. We threw it in the basket to try.

DSC_4178.jpg

We ended with the noodle isle. I love noodles. It's been a while since I was in this store. I discovered types of noodles that they didn't have before, and also some that I didn't know existed.

We will exit with a noodle parade. Get ready!

DSC_4167.jpg

Corn starch noodles?

DSC_4172.jpg

Black rice vermicelli?

DSC_4173.jpg

Sorghum starch noodles?!!! What's sorghum starch?

DSC_4174.jpg

Purple potato noodles!

DSC_4175.jpg

Sweet potato starch noodles!

DSC_4176.jpg

Brown rice vermicelli. I bought these. I've had them before.

DSC_4180.jpg

Yam lotus seeds noodles!!! What?!!!!

DSC_4182.jpg

Mulberry leaf noodles?!!!! What? What? How is that a thing?

DSC_4183.jpg

Okay so the final exit other than the noodle parade, is the eatery upstairs from the grocer.

It's a noodle place!

They make noodles from scratch and you choose your accompaniment. Very impressive to watch the hard work and skill going into this production.

Admit it. You want noodles now right?

DSC_4188.jpg

After leaving this place, it was dark outside. That was quite the market Friday.

Thanks for dropping by!

That's so cool that there are underground passages to other buildings, especially in the cold, bleak winter! And what a fabulous market you found in Chinatown! whoo hooo!

Yes Montreal is known for having an underground city due to the cold haha.

Thank you!!!

I’m so sorry that you lost your job😢 It really stinks, especially since it’s both of you 😢😢😢
As for the grocery store, my word, I certainly wouldn’t be able to choose. I’d do something crazy like take all the noodles and chilies 🌶 home with me.
Really wonderful post, I love the interesting aisles you’ve journeyed down and your pictures are totally stellar.
Happy New Year
I hope things improve for you 🌿🍀🤗❤️💕🤗❤️💕🤗💕

Ahh what a lovely comment. Losing our jobs stinks but great at the same time. We needed a break. Work ethic among some younger folks is astonishing and unbearable. Let's just say we didn't need at least two of them with the amount of work they did.

The thing about the noodles is that, the ones I took photos of, were just the tip of the iceburg haha. There were so many more. I'll have to go back to grab something weird to try.

I thank you very much and Happy New year to you too!!!!😊❤️

Wow. That's a blog post... How many kinds of pasta they got over there... Oh and a dumb question: what camera did you use for the pics?

They have many more kinds believe it or not. I used a Nikon D7500. Not a stupid question at all.😊

That’s a amazing walk! I have never tried to walk there. Now I wait to see your new recipe post, my friend. I’m sorry for you both losing jobs. I hope you both find the new jobs soon. Happy New Year.

It's okay. We need a break. We will just rest for now. Thank you and Happy New year to you too!😊

Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

Thank you for your support!

Jeez. So many type of noodles. Now I'm craving noodles. And you had quite the Friday. Here I am exposed to things I did not know before thanks to you. I don't think my heart can take intimidating attendants. I might cry or storm out...😂

I didn't even show all the noodles. It's crazy what they make into noodles haha.
I have learned to tolerate the miserable people at this store. They don't have a problem with people shopping there even if they are not friendly. There are not many places to go to get these things.

Thank you so much!😊

❤️❤️❤️❤️

Oh yes, I could definitely eat a bowl of noodles now. Who knew there was so many different types, some make no sense at all, if I am honest.
So sorry to hear about your job. I know that better things await you both. Wishing you all the best for 2023 @carolynstahl xxxxx

That was just a small selection but I picked the less popular. I may work up the nerve to try the weirdest ones haha.

The job loss is all for the best in the long run. We need to have time to think you know?

Thank you and the best to you as well!!!!

Montreal is beautiful in winter … and summer, spring and fall. Happy New Year from Merrickville, Ontario. 🇨🇦

Oh hello. I grew up in Hamilton Ontario and lived there most of my life. We prefer Montreal but Merrickville seems nice. We think about leaving for a new place all the time.

Happy New year to you too.

Mulberry leaf noodles, goodness me, it sounds like they make noodles out of just about anything edible! I've never seen most of those varieties!
It certainly looks cold though and I'm glad that you're enjoying the break. I do hope that your next job comes at just the right time and will be a good experience my friend, you really deserve the best🙏

Happy New Year my dear Carolyn! I am so sorry to hear about the
closing of the restaurant you've worked-in. I check Hive from time to time but did not make any post the last 4 months since the untimely passing of my beloved husband. It's hard to be alone but my family and friends are comforting me.
I am sure you and Marc will find a new job,...you are an excellent cook, remember that!
I wish you all the best for 2023, good health, more blessings to come. I will pray for both of you. Stay strong always!
Love, Mers

Oh no! I am so sorry about your husband. I really pray for your heart to heal.I know it's not easy and it takes a long long time. I am really glad you have your friends and family to help you through this.

We really don't want to look for a job right now for some rest, but eventually the money will run out and we will have to find something. It's depressing honestly. We feel like hiding for the winter.

When you feel strong enough, perhaps you could use Hive for some therapy. It would be wonderful for us all to have you back. But I understand of course.

I'll pray for your spirit to heal. Blessings to you too my friend.❤️❤️

There were so many mice to choose from. They all ranged in prices. I talked him into a less expensive one, since the expensive ones keep breaking.

We usually buy the cheapest mouse in the store. They are completely good. We have not break any mouse at all so far. But we lost a few mouse in the past, when we moved (relocated) from one house to another.

That's good to know. We have purchased two fairly expensive ones and they both give problems. Thanks.

The Malls are a one stop for everything. The China town looks attractive. I guess they are the same almost everywhere, and you can find variety of products with them. I am not a Noodle fan at all, probably because there is very limited stuff that I have seen. These are a good variety to try out.
Btw sorry to hear about your job loss and hope that both of you can get into something soon.

Yes the China town is fun for me but honestly, it's the worst China town I've ever been to haha.

I love most types of foods being raised in Canada which is super multicultural, but I really would pick rice over noodles if I had to choose one.

Thank you so much for your lovely comment. Have a great day!
