ART or CREATIVITY

While I could of course share a few more pictures that I take, and put this title about it. I will share those pictures anyway someday. So why not discuss it a bit. Also because my thoughts about how to classify what I do is a bit two sided.

So what I do, is it Art or Creativity or None ?

It depends. So yes.. that answers that. Are we done? Of course an it depends doesn´t say much. Only that I don´t see every photo I create as art or creative. And that I see some as art or creative.

Why does it differ between photos?

What isn´t art?

Sometimes I just want to capture what I see. I see something interesting, I want to capture it to show it. But it's more that if you take a picture of a old building or a painting, is the picture the art? or the building/painting.

Image of a lamb, see post Casting-Metal: Spring always makes me happy

Also if I take a picture of a bird or animal that walks in front of me. I just want to capture what I see. But I didn´t do much for the picture. Almost anyone could have made that same picture.
But on the other hand, what if you try to capture the best angle/viewpoint for the building so that it shows its beauty the most. Would it have more impact in black and white? Or that I try to figure out how an animal behaves so I can get an even better picture. And put some thinking and time into figuring out and waiting trying to get the best possible shot.

What is art and/or creative?

Sometimes you try out different angles or I now sometimes do thrichrome photography. Something very fun and I will probably show some examples later. But if you can´t wait, look it up. Also with long exposure and depth of field there can be many choices on how you want to look a picture. I showed here some long exposure shots.

Long exposure picture of the Rheinfall

The one of the Rheinfall I was already thinking about it before I went to Austria. Taking my tripod and ND filters. I had a goal. I knew what I wanted to create. The other one was a sunrise. I researched where the sun would rise, so that I could have the sun behind the tower and over the water.

On the other hand I get myself thinking. That is just research, not much creative about it.

So what is for me what something makes it art?

It would be too simple to say effort/thought. While in my case, what is see as creative/art of things I made, it is effort or thought I put in something. Because I see myself sometime creating something that I would call art, but didn´t take me much effort.
But maybe then it's the effort I put to get to that point what count. But for me it's more the goal or intent behind something. Do I just want to show something. Or do want to show something special, maybe a view I saw but probably the rest didn´t. Or just putting much time and effort in something to show it as it's best.

Does it matter?

I guess not really, but for me it kindoff does. A photo is good when you like the photo. And great if others also like the picture. But in some cases I just think, what is special about it? Not much, almost everybody could take that shot. Of course, because I saw something a way, it's easy to think everyone would have seen it. Or have the same ideas to create something.
So I guess in the end it is probably the same as for many people that create art. Lowering the expectations or results of what they create. Maybe I should have learned to draw something. That always cost some effort to create.

Conclusion

For me, there are a number of things that clearly are Art or Creative. And then there is a big gray area, which you could I guess defend both sides, and it will differ how you look at it. I mainly think that I would see somebody elses work sooner as creative or art than my own. Just because everybody sees the world a bit different, and so their ideas will earlier look creative to me than my own.

But the main thing is that we enjoy what we create and what others create.

So this time, not much to show what I create. I wanted to do something a bit different because for the rest I show here what i created, but if you like the examples and want to see more, feel free to follow me and to browse my profile. It is always good to know if people like what you create.

I hope you enjoyed reading this post

This was a good discussion and I can agree that some human effort to improve something or present something can distinguish a regular thing to become art. Regarding creativity, I cant place it, but usually someone just surprises you with a natural creative ability that maybe stands out? Great food for thought.

Thank you.
Yes creativity is a strange thing. I haven´t really got a read on it. For me it about thinking different, but is it because they can think in a lot of different ways, more than we do. Or would they think we are creative, if they were more people thinking like them. And less people thinking like me.

But maybe it is good that we, or at least I, don´t really have a grip on what creative is, to keep it more interesting

You sound like a self-conflicting looney tune haha of course it's art, if you have to choose your angle, adjust the settings, bring the right gear, and imagine the location you are going to and what shots you want to get, then there is a certain amount of creative process that went into it.

Anybody could take a photograph, paint a picture, or write a story, but someone who sits down to do it is the difference between anyone being able to do and someone actually doing it. Then there is a skill level that comes with practice, I mean, I've seen some musicians who make it look easy, but because it's easy to them, does it make it more or less creative?

In fairness, I get what you mean though, and I think the longer you work at it, the more confident you'll be in your work and you'll be more inclined to see everything you do with a camera as a creative endeavor and art. It took me about 6-7 years of playing bass before I thought of myself as a musician.

I enjoyed the read, keep up the good work!

About the musician, if it's easy for them, I would call it more creative. Certainly if it isn´t easy for me. They can do something I can´t. And that is why I guess I said that I would say I would probably think sooner that another person is creative than myself. Because I can do what I create.

And yes it is a bit a self-conflicting story, but I wanted to show to show that I (and many people) are inclined to see what they do themselves as less special, because they are used to it.

But I hope you are right about that with time everything I do with camera feel as creative. Because can't hurt to improve that more.

I don't mind if not everything is it on the other hand. I also enjoy "documenting", just like the photo of the lamb. I saw them, I took a picture.
But for other things, I guess i'm leaning somewhat too much to not art/creative probably.

Thanks for the nice words
