Looking out to sea

That is the best way I can describe one of the towns I visit most often for work and pleasure, Castro Urdiales.

IMG_6845.JPG

It is a town located on the shores of the Cantabrian Sea with a seafaring tradition dating back to ancient times when even whales were hunted in this sea.

It is a village with deep-rooted jobs such as weaving fishing nets or selling fish from house to house as was done in the past by the fishwives.

IMG_6799.JPG

IMG_6813.JPG

It is a beautiful village where the small boats of the fishermen mingle with the small pleasure boats of some of the local residents.

IMG_6819.JPG

IMG_6803.JPG

The marina and fishing port are sheltered by a long breakwater that protects the village from the fierce Cantabrian Sea.

IMG_6797.JPG

IMG_0739 (3).JPG

The breakwater is a place where the locals and visitors alike go for a stroll.

IMG_6816.JPG

It is a unique place from which one has a special perspective of two of themost visited places in the village, the church and the castle-lighthouse.

IMG_6820b.JPG

The church of Santa María de la Asunción, in a marked Gothic style, is one of the most beautiful on the Cantabrian coast. It is not considered a cathedral because it has not been assigned a bishop, but it is a jewel located on a cliff.

IMG_6849.JPG

Many centuries ago there was another church located right next to it, but today only a few ruins remain. This was the church of San Pedro.

DSC01744.JPG

And right next to it an ancient castle, which is now a lighthouse.

DSC01743b.JPG

DSC01746.JPG

This lighthouse is the perfect vantage point from which to get a unique and unbeatable view of the village, the fishing port with its small boats and the breakwater.

Although the perspective of these two feathered friends who wanted to pose in my photos was a real eye-catcher.

DSC01753.jpg

But writing this post I was getting late, it was almost getting dark and I had not yet gone to the cliffs to see another part of the village where there are some beaches and other cliffs where the sea breaks with force.

DSC01778.JPG

But so much walking around the town made me hungry and there is no better place in Castro Urdiales than near the town hall square.

IMG_6824.JPG

There you will find the Restaurante Marinero, a luxury, with fish dishes like this grilled monkfish accompanied by a white wine.

IMG_6856.JPG

Or if you don't want to spend a lot of money, another very good option is to eat some grilled baby squid at the restaurant La Cierbanata.

IMG_6828.JPG

IMG_6829.JPG

And if we eat a lot, walking at night is a good option along the Ocharan-Mazas promenade.

Best regards.

I love these harbor shots every time since I'm from an inland state that doesn't have an ocean :)
