I have never really liked history, same way I don't like government. Both subjects deal with too many names and dates and I can't stand them. It's surprising that I quite have a didactic memory for events that I have witnessed given that I don't like them. I mean, these subjects.
My parents, my dad particularly, knows dates to the tee. Very accurately. Fron years before he was born. Same goes for his mother. You can guess that the correct recollection of names, places, events, and dates thing runs in their family. He would make a great historian.
Oftentimes, I enjoy listening as he tells me these things that add notes and images to a much bigger picture.
When I first saw this prompt, in all frankness, I quickly said no. I thought that history was an overrated course. I had not given a thought to why it was being studied or anything. It was just my personal feeling. You know how we give praises to professional courses such as medicine, pharmacy, engineering and the likes but care and rever others very little, yeah? That. That and the fact that this society, this country Nigeria, and its educational and employment sectors have got little reverence for those courses by meaning of what value and benefit they accrue them.
I think history isn't overrated. It should be taught. I might not agree to it being a compulsory subject but maybe for some art classes and for those who have the interest to study certain courses further in the higher institutions, it should.
Studying history enables us to develop a better understanding of the world in which we live. It is effective in knowledge building and in understanding of historical events and trends, especially over the past century, as it enables us to develop a much greater appreciation for current events today. Because history gives us the tools to analyze and explain problems in the past, it positions us to see patterns that might otherwise be invisible in the present - thus providing a crucial perspective for understanding (and solving!) current and future problems.
Nowadays it is important to know history as we should know what happen in early day/times. I think that now, it really is needed for us to study history and know about the past. It is important to study history to not only be knowledgeable about where you have been but to also help you with the future. History is full of people that have made mistakes or been in similar situations.When students learn about history, they are able to recall certain facts that happened in the past through the vast knowledge of what information is available. However, I must include that I have objections to how history is told from one view point
We all care about family histories, health histories, so many others too. So what then is so different about learning history in school when in fact they are instrumental to giving us a background to what happened in the past, letting us take up the advantageous paths and avoiding the errors and enables us make better and informed choices? History is who we are and we can not eliminate who we are
