Happy face because of clearer vision.
Trying to read without glasses for comparison.
Waiting for them to finish their business.
Enjoying reading his newly bought book and his new eyeglasses.
Hello, Hiver friends!
I mentioned in my buzz yesterday that we got my eldest son eyeglasses. We, as a family, have been discussing it for months and even had a consultation with an eye doctor before. But lately, his blurry vision has gotten so bad that I asked my husband to book an appointment with the eye doctor and make it one of our priorities this week. I've noticed that he almost closes his eyes to stare at the screen, which he doesn't usually do before. Upon his checkup, we found out that he has nearsightedness and astigmatism, and his current eye grade is 100/75, which is already bad for his age.
Though it was expected that he would not have good vision given his genes, his dad cannot drive without eyeglasses. The doctor explained to us that most kids today have blurry vision because of being exposed to screens at a very young age. We were guilty of that, but we were still trying our best to get what was best for him. We delayed getting him graded glasses because he said he wasn't ready to wear eyeglasses yet, so we only got him anti-radiation glasses two years ago. I cannot recall how many times he lost it and even sat on it and broke it, but now he doesn't have a choice. He badly needed eyeglasses, whether he liked them or not.
His doctor recommended two types of eyeglasses for him: the graded one and the one specifically designed to control the progression of myopia, or his nearsightedness. His second eyeglass is made to order, so we will get it after a few days. We were able to get his graded eyeglasses the same day after spending almost two hours in the eye clinic. He took his time choosing the frame, making sure he was comfortable, and calibrating the lenses. We didn't rush him on choosing because we could not afford to get unfit eyeglasses for him; those glasses aren't cheap! I'm glad his father is by his side to assist him throughout the process.
Me and my toddler waited for them outside the optical shops. After fitting and consultation, they met us, and they were advised to go back after half an hour to pick up the graded glasses. My eldest wanted to go to the bookstore to check out some books and also make some comparisons between reading before and after getting eyeglasses. We let him be and gave him some money so he could buy the book that he picked.
After receiving a text from the optical shop that his glasses were ready for pickup, we came back to get them. He already had a book with him to see the comparison, and the doctor smiled when my son said he was seeing everything in high definition! I'm just glad he liked having eyeglasses. After a short orientation and teaching him proper care of his new eyeglasses, we made our way home. I told him to tell us if there was any discomfort he felt after wearing his new lenses.
He still needs to go back to the eye doctor every three months for monitoring and a checkup.
We've learned our lesson, and now I'm very strict on screen time, especially with my toddler.
